Fuel MPG - D15B7 or D16Z6 better?
I'm VERY new to the whole Honda thing, cause I drive a lifted crewcab F350. I have a 95 Civic DX (D15B7 with MT) that I bought for my daughter. Long story short, it's minus a head gasket and a rod bearing now!!
Anyway, I picked her up a $1000 Paseo to drive and I'm taking the Civic back for myself. Looking like I'm just going to do a D16Z6 swap and use it for when I don't need my truck. Not looking to build big power, just a good dependable car with great MPG.
If I'm looking at it from a fuel mileage point of view, how is the D16Z6 compared to the D15B7? From everything I have read, the D16Z6 is my best option, just wanting to make sure so I can start looking. Thanks in advance for any help.

well depends on the motor and how it was broken in. i got a d16y7 and i get 43 mpg mostly city and people with the same exact car get 35. just depends on the engine. but id get the d16 easier to find parts

That's I was thinking. I noticed the D15B7's seem to be harder to find. Now I just need to find a smokin deal on a D16Z6.

unfortunately, our junkyards around here are just that... JUNK-yards!! Everything is 200,000 miles or more. I actually found this I might look into if I can find anything else:
http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/ws/eB...K%3AMEWAX%3AIT
80,000 miles or less, complete with motor, trans, axles, ECU, shift linkages etc.

no bad idea.
go to hmotorsonline at least. i wouldn't buy engine parts from ebay let alone the whole thing.
but stay on the d series line.

I have a D15B7 with who knows how many miles (swapped in by the previous owner), and I get great gas mileage.
I haven't exactly done the math for what I get gas mileage wise, but I do know that I put in $20 every Sunday, and it lasts me a whole week. I drive to school four times a week (10+ miles), work almost every day, and then random errands throughout the week.
It's a slow motor though, for sure. Don't expect anything even remotely quick.. hahah.

Like I said, I'm not looking for a race car. It ran decent enough for me with the D15B7 thats in it (before it cratered).

Is that a Power Stroke Diesel I detect there? I think I have your truck's Extended-Cab brother! LOL
That's what I bought a Honda for as well, gas mileage is great compared to our trucks. My motor is a D15B7 with a manual trans, and my car gets between 36 and 39 city, depending on how I drive. 42+ highway.

They are not that much different. Get whatever you can find cheaper.
The z6 has a vtec head, so you will need to wire that up, whereas another d15b7 would be plug and play i guess. But no big deal.
At hmotorsonline you could go for a ZC longblock or the D15B (JDM motor) (DOH they dont have obd1 d15b's i guess? They say 1996+ engines)
I dont know anything about the zc swap, but found some info
http://hondaswap.com/swap-articles/zc-swap-info-29123/
It says they fit.. doesnt mean its bolt in though =[ Mounts? Maybe check into ZC mileage before checking how easy it is to swap in an eg
Just thought i would share what i was looking at before i went with an h22!
It is really hard to find a low mileage Z6 though. Really it is!
Its not like the d15/16 are worth getting machined either? unless it is more cheap than i think it is?
//edit If your doing this on the cheap, it is probably better you do not get a b series engine. It is going to cost more to swap because you will need axels and other stuff. I dont really know how they are on mileage though, probably almost as good? Oah and interesting truck. I still cannot believe my friends truck has 600lbs of torque though (dodge cummins diesel) that is just insane
Please correct me if I have spread any misinformation. I misunderstand stuff sometimes

Well, they will fit the 92-2000 Civics or the 94 up Integra... not that anyone would want to put it in an Integra. Again, this engine bolts to the stock transmission and the Si or EX trannys make for a decent combo. But if you decide to use the 92 up ZC tranny with your 92 up ZC engine, get the 92 up Civic ZC intermediate shaft too because again, there is no US counterpart to this part. Although it is different from the 88-91 style, it is interchangeable.

Well I bought a D16Z6 today. Its right at 100,000 miles, has had all routine maintenance perfromed. Its from a 92 civic four door ex. Still in the car running. Complete swap, motor, 5spd, shift linkages, axles etc. Everything except the ECU for $400. He's going to pull it and I'll probably pick it up next week. Time to start gathering all the misc parts. Sorry for the crappy cell phone pics:

Sweet score. How did you find the guy selling it? I'm looking to upgrade to a d16z6 as well, or possibly a B18B, after I finish fixing my car's frame.

Re: Fuel MPG - D15B7 or D16Z6 better?
Back before I swapped in my B18B1 I had a D16Z6 in my Coupe. I had put the general bolt-ons on it which were an 11lb flywheel(had to put in new clutch so put that in as well while I was in there), 2 1/4" mandrel bent exhaust, intake and I averaged 38-40MPG consistently. My ex and I drove to her hometown of Maryland from North Carolina several times which was 98% a highway/interstate trip and I got 45MPG each time. You won't be disappointed in my opinion.
Heck, even my LS averages 36MPG and that's with the shorter geared GSR tranny. Enjoy great fuel savings over your truck..with the cost of power of course

$400.00 for that Z6 set-up is a STEAL!!!
In my area (GA) the SOHC 1.6L VTEC engines are selling at importers for $800.00-$1,100.00 depending on year model. The 1.5L ones go for as "little" as $650.00. Keep in mind these are just the engine itself kind of deals.
Next you'll need a 92-95 Civic EX/Si "P28" ECU for that D16Z6. Make sure it's for a 5-speed since I see you've got a 5-speed trans there. Oh and it's called a "P28" ECU because the middle three digits in the part number on the side of the ECU are "P28." Look on your current D15B7 ECU and it should be a "P06."

your gonna gain the most MPG by what transmission you use. a dx transmission will always get more then a ex anyway. z6 with a y7 tranny FTW

Yeah I already picked up a Virgin P28 for a 5spd for $80.
