Icon5 Fuel/Air sensor replaced, Still CEL 99 HX

1999 Civic HX
Hey guys,
First post here. Really just here to find fixed to this car I purchased.
I got the car and had the computer scanned for the CEL and came up as a p1164 for the fuel air sensor. Ordered a new one, it is a Honda/NTK sensor, so the same as the one that came out of the manifold.
Replaced the sensor and reset the CEL. After about 5 minutes of driving the CEL will come back on. Ive seen some say replacing the computer is a fix but then I see that some say it didnt do anything at all! Is there a good solution for this?
Also, with the new sensor in the car, when driving on the highway or at higher speeds it seems the car is holding back at points and then regaining the power than holding back again. It is really weird?
Any advice? I am thinking about putting the old sensor back in to see if that cures the holding back issue at higher speeds, since I dont recall it doing this previously. The only other thing I have replaced was the spark plugs (NGK 4043's) as the wires and all looked in good condition and a new fuel filler cap.
I have done a lot of searching on the board but couldnt come up with my specific situation with the holding back of the power on the highway.
Thanks for any help!
Brandon

So technically, from what I read, the NTK wideband o2 sensor is finicky. You'll need to source a Denso. I know...you just burnt through a couple hundred for the ntk and I feel your pain.

Before you buy a new sensor, I would recommend finding the engine wiring diagram for your car and testing the wiring from the sensor to the ecu. You could have bad wiring. I have the shop manual saved on my other computer but you can find it online for free. Also RonJ may post a pic, he always does lol.

Amazingly found the ntk honda part online for under $100. Just hate to throw the cash at another one ya know but it is what it is.

Yeah I was wondering is someone has a pin out. I could ohm the wires out if needed or volt test em.

Do both. Do a quick ohm test and then a voltage drop - it doesn't hurt.
I'm also sure you can test the resistance of the sensor and compare to what the book says.

Quick question, did you scan the cel the second time and get the same fault or did the light come on and you assume it was the same fault?

interesting...unless this car is from california I don't see how a wideband o2 could be that cheap. Or the motor was swapped, you're now running something that isn't the HX.

NTK 24300. Its the only 5 wire a/f sensor speced for a 99 HX with manual trans. Nothing about being a Cali car and pretty sure its been an NC car its whole life, but I would have to check for through the VIN to be sure.
Bought the car from my GF's parents. Its still the original d16y5 by the block. They had the car for 90k miles.

Looking at the shop manual - Section 11 Page 150 (Fuels And Emissions 11-150), it has the DTC P1164 and a super brief testing/diagnostic tree - which states to clear the fault and retesting after a drive cycle. If the fault comes back, you replace the sensor. If it doesn't it was just a glitch in the matrix.

Hmmm...

Since there are no specific wiring test plans for this fault, you could maybe skip over them. BUT if I was you, I would still test them just to be sure.

If wiring is good, I would then clear the fault and install the old sensor, just to see what happens.

Let us know and good luck!

Just check continuity from the plug to the ecu, this is a 5 wire o2 sensor correct?

Majestic Honda shows it for $405.00(#8)

OP - is this what your manifold looks like?
If so, what part # did you get and where from?

It is the 5 wire.
Like I said, now that the new sensor is in it seems to have a spot when driving on the highway, even with consistent throttle pressure to stay at a constant speed, it feels as if the car loses power then regains it. Just weird after a new sensor install.
Ill reset, the code again. I have driven over 100+ miles since the install so I will see if I can reset it.

The Honda part # for the sensor should be 36531-P2M-A01

The secondary sensor (#9) goes for $208 on the same site - hopefully you didn't get them switched somehow. Part # for the secondary is 36532-P2E-A01

Looking on NGK's site for the NTK sensor - it should be #24300

So after looking at how the wire sheething is on the other sensors, I think this one may be advertised wrong, as all the other sensors I see have a round rubber piece for attatching to a clip in the enine bay as #8 shows on the diagram. IDK if the NTK does or doesnt but the one I had does not.
