Well if you grind into second upshift or downshifting, it's like 99% messed up synchro. And maybe bent shift fork. If it's a d series tranny I wouldn't even bother. Because for $100-200 you can get ex/si tranny from z6 or y8 and put it in yourself in a day if not less.

I don't know about putting it in in a day especially if it is his first tranny in that old of a car it may take a day to get the axels off. Be sure that you get a good low mile tranny and while you are in there change the clutch

Definitely not a bad idea at all.

oh I think I get what you are saying. the axles run into the tranny if you change trannys you need to pull the axles. This can be tough even on a 99 sometimes those bastards seem like they will never come off. You will also need to pull the axles if you change the syncro to get the tranny apart

You would basicly get a tranny without messed up synchros, or shift forks (or other internals). You just got to make sure that the person that you are buying a tranny from lives close by and incase it is messed up just give it back to him.

Re: fucked up my second gear (bgoetz)
in short: Your tranny is conected to the crank through the shaft your crank turns the gears in you tranny were all kinds of crazy **** goes on. This then turns the differential and finally your axles that are conected to your tires and the car moves. Your syncro is among the all kinds of crazy **** and is would be alot easier to replace the entire tranny

It won't be better (in most cases), it's just cheaper and more reasonable. The only reason y I would try to rebuild the tranny if I would need a stong tranny to take alot of torque and alot of abuse. It costs alot and is just not worth it.

Re: fucked up my second gear (jdm123)
yankin a tranny should only take 4 hrs even for an amature w/ little mechanical knowledge. any guys with experience can have it done in 2 hrs give or take. its actually a really easy process. ppl like to make it out to b a big ordeal when its not.

Re: fucked up my second gear (jdm123)
The thing that I always recommend in this situation is fixing the tranny you have. Why? Because you could go out and buy a tranny that has synchros worse than the ones in your transmission now.
Just suck it up like a man and either replace the synchros yourself or have someone GOOD rebuild the tranny with new synchros. Replace them all and be done with it.
