Friggin catalytic converter springs, how do I compress them back?
Hey,
I was installing a new hi flow cat in my 96 civic coupe and everything is going ok except when i was screwing it back into the spring bolts, and it is impossible for me to screw the bolts back in because the springs are not compressed, i'm pretty sure i'm missing a step. Please help Thanks

Sometimes, if you dont line the cat and header up right, it can become impossible to put the springs on. I always have to use a stock Honda jack on my exhaust, at the rear of the car, where the first bend is in the piping. For some reason, my exhaust likes to twist whenever I drop it to do some work with my cat...

ahhhh! I still cannot get the springs to fit. Vice grips aren't helping either. I know this is simple but can somebody please tell me exactly how they did it?

you can always cut the springs, but then people will call you a ricer for having cut springs.
haha just kidding. it could be that the new cat has a thicker wall therefore making it harder to get the springs back on. maybe you should cut like 1 coil off of each spring.

get the cat and the exhaust lined up.. then take a pair of vice grips and squeeze them together the best you can... this should make it a bit easier when installing the springs.... the reason i think is that it helps compress the new gasket you used

When ever I mess around with those exhaust springs, I always have to take a pair of slip joint pliers and compress the springs and get the nut started on the bolt and then you should be good to go.
