Friends clutch problem **This will get you saying WTF!!**
This isnt eg or ek related but I was wondering if anyone has had or heard of this problem before with their clutches. My friend drives a 00 Impreza 2.5RS thats got a aftermarket turbo kit on it boosting 6 psi. It makes about 240 hp, not sure to the crank or wheels. We installed an ACT street/strip clutch disk and cover, and put in an Exedy lightened flywheel.
He was driving home on the freeway and he says that the clutch gave way and just made the engine slip all the way up to redline in 5th. After getting it towed home I look under the car and see what looks to be feathers all around his tranny. My first question was did you hit a bird ,he says no, and I thought damn thats probably the fibers of the clutch disk. So anyway today we suffered through the ordeal of dropping the tranny out of a AWD car once again and see this amazing site.
Clutch on the motor (notice the furryness)
ACT Clutch disk and cover (notice how there is no more clutch surface left on the disk)
Looks as if the clutch disk just exploded on him

Ha ha yeah its got about 6000 miles on it and he drives very conservatively with his car. We only took it to the drag strip once a week before this happened.

Re: (MIdoriEK)
unless he drove it under about 3,000 rpms for the first 500 miles or so he did not break the cluch in properly.. That's not 500 miles of HIGHWAY driving. Thats 500 miles of CITY driving. Constantly shifting and starting. If he didnt do that he's an idiot and is out 500 dollars for a new clutch. Sure hope you didnt take his car to the track the first week he got that clutch in.. LoL.
That is EXACTLY what happens when the clutch is not broken in properly. It "Glazes" over and the rpms shoot up and slowly fall back down when you shift.
I've never actually seen a clutch after it was "glazed" over, so i can't tell you if thats what they look like or not. That looks really weird..

To me, that looks like 1.) a warped clutch from the factory or 2.) a clutch that was installed improperly. If the throwout bearing is wrong or not put in correctly, the clutch will maintain contact when it's not supposed to, albeit just a little, but enough for it to kerplode like it did.
If it was installed off center, one of the clutch pucks may be more worn than the others, and that's probably the culprit.
Personally, I've never seen a clutch do that. Someone's *** needs to be kicked for it.

When I bought an ACT extreme clutch, the instructions said that in order to break in the clutch propery, you can A) Drive slow for 500 miles or B) Do ten consecutive sessions of hard driving with a ten minute gap inbetween so the clutch can cool down.
You don't neccisarrily have to do the 500 mile break in... but if this guy was driving hard on the freeway, then that is an improper break-in.

Re: (CivicCLMT)
Alright here we go. My fried did break it in, like i said before he drives very conservatively. After installing it I did tell him that he needed to break it in and he did do that. Its got 6000 miles on it so its well past the break in period.
I helped install it and Ive done 4 other clutch change jobs in the past. The disk was aligned properly. Everything was torqued down the spec. Nothing was put in the wrong way. The throwout bearing was set in properly with the two holder springs. It was not set in backwards. No bolts backed out. Everything was centered up with the supplied alignment tools. When my friend drove it and when I drove it the during the 6000 miles we never once had any problems with strange noises or with the clutch not gripping. I am positive that we put in the clutch correctly.

Re: (aw1234dude)
Ohh yeah and the person that said the clutch may have maintained contact a little...... The clutch disk is supposed to maintain contact so that the motor can transmit power to the transmission. If it wasnt contacting it would slip all the time or nothing would get sent to the wheels.
