Four doors and best mileage
What's the best model/year Honda for mileage that is available with four doors? So far, it looks like the 1992 to 1995 Civic Sedan is it. Here's the specs from fueleconomy.gov:
1992 4dr Sdn DX 35 40
1993 4dr Sdn DX 34 40
1994 4dr Sdn DX 34 40
1995 4dr Sdn DX 34 40
Any others to consider? If anyone has one of these to sell near Iowa, please e-mail.

1993 4dr Sdn DX 34 40
1994 4dr Sdn DX 34 40
1995 4dr Sdn DX 34 40

That's if your timing/ignition is up to spec. My 1995 only gets 200-250 miles per tank with granny shifting and granny driving. Highway, about 300 miles per tank. But, I really think the previous owner swapped the gas tank out for a CX/VX gas tank. Even when COMPLETELY empty and my needle goes below the "E" line, it never goes above 8.8 gallons to fill it up. I still have some timing issues to resolve though.

Is there a spending limit with this?
if there isn't it seems pretty obvious that the honda hybrid is the best for gas mileage-four door that is a Honda anyway.
Otherwise you could always swap an HX motor into a '92 - '95 civic, esp since there are a lot of people getting rid of them for swaps to performance.

Isn't it the VX motor for 92-95 Civics. Doesn't the HX model come in 1996+ which is OBD2? I say swap in a VX motor/tranny, call it a day. Those things, with proper maintenece, do 40+mpg.

Re: (jazzman)
I had 48 avg on my HX with a full load on a trip from Dallas to Austin. Apart from that trip I got 41-45. After the Ex tranny swap I was seeing 35-39. The HX or VX motor would both do you good.

Gas Mileage question
i have a EG sedan w/ a mini-me conversion, I/H/E, 59300 Comp Cam, and a Y8 tranny (EX/Si). I am still getting 32-35 mpg in the city, and about 38 - 42 mpg on the freeway w/ average acceleration and keeping revs below 3500rpm. Anyway u go, u will get great mileage if your timing is correct and u don't rev too high, so its a matter of your personal preference and what u want to do w/ the motor/car
Hope that helps

Re: Four doors and best mileage (bryan42)
The new Civic EX gets like 40 highway I think, but I'd reccomend a 96 Civic EX sedan, cause its OBD-II, gets a little better gas mileage than most 5th gen sedans (better engine overall) but the car is a tad heavier, so it may equal out.

The new Civic EX runs a VTEC-E engine now
