Default Forgot to add Transmission oil when i Changed the tranny...

I forgot to add Transmission oil for my friend when we did the clutch job, d series.

He drove around for 3days, then we rembered there was not tranny oil inside.

Is the tranny damaged? Should we switch it out? long term effects of no tranny oil?

how was he driving it?

was it poping out of gear?

I had LOW tranny fluid and mine would pop out of 5th gear, since that is highest in the transmission.. i'd say if he didn't beat it , then just fill it up and you should be fine.

Add oil in, drive for a while and flush the tranny again. See if there are metal flakes that come out.

Too much friction/grinding damage may be done. I bet if you crack the cast open, the point on the gears and syncros may be worn.

Just fill it up and turn it on and let the car idle for about 5 minutes, then flush it out and check for metal flakes. If there are a lot of flakes then best bet is to start shopping around for another tranny or get ready to rebuild that one if he can. If there aren't too many flakes then hopefully he'll get lucky and that one will last last him a good while.

And you guys didn't immediately put some in?

That should tell you pretty much right away whether it's fucked up or not...

Answer me this though. When you pulled the tranny did you drain the fluid or any poor out??? If it was epmty then it wouldnt have lasted 3 days. So im sure its got fluid in it.

exactly. There's not a chance in hell it would have gone more than a couple of hours with no fluid.

Well if you think about it, not every drop is removed from the transmission if you just "drain" the fluid. Some is still left on the actual gears/synchros, on crevices, etc...so there might be enough fluid to make the transmission run without grinding or popping out of gear.

IMO, go to your local Autistic Zone or APC Boys and buy some Pennzoil Synchromesh and a bottle of Friction Modifier OR go to your local GM Dealer and buy some GM Synchromesh with the FM already in it (GM is a bit more pricier). Fill her up and drive.

We just drained the tranny like normal.

We added some 5-30 oil in and he is driving it right now. Drives fine. Hope it last. Crossing fingers.

We didnt flush it yet. Ill do that today.
