Default Fog light harness concern

I have a brand new set of fogs and the harness looks a little too thin for my liking... I'm somewhat familiar with wiring and am planning on redoing the harness with a lower gauge (I think it's 18 or 20 right now) but wanted to know if anyone has done this? Also plan to replace inline fuse, and relay with something of higher quality. I had a similar set in the past and the harness melted on me, this was a gift so I would like to make it work! Any help would be much appreciated.

Thanks.

This here is pretty much the DIY you want: https://honda-tech.com/forums/honda-civic-del-sol-1992-2000-1/%5Bfaq%5D-diy-convert-jdm-oem-92-95-civic-foglight-harness-oem-cdm-usdm-legal-spec-2579499/#post38728883

I am assuming that you have an aftermarket set? You're right that the wiring that comes with them is pretty much crap. You can use that DIY to do a couple of things: 1. Buy the OEM harness (often the OEM JDM harnesses are found on sites like eBay) and optionally convert it to USDM-spec for use with your aftermarket fogs, or 2. Make your own OEM-spec harness using salvaged wiring for same. But, note that both these options make use of the fact that your 94 (or 95) Civic is already pre-wired for fog lights down the driver's side wiring harness between the driver's footwell and the headlights, which means that the correct gauge of wiring is used.

Thanks for the response man, my only concern with that is that when I tucked my bay I eliminated those wires that we not in use if you are referring to the brown connector on the driver side headlight harness. Also, I was thinking about upgrading the relay to something of better quality and copying the aftermarket harness using 16 or 14 gauge... which would you suggest? And a 10 amp fuse, maybe 7.5?

Appreciate your help.

The relay is OK, but if you want to replace it get a 'horn' relay off the underdash fuse box for OEM quality.

16ga wire is fine.

Stick with OEM fuse amperage, do NOT change it.

Again, thanks man... as far as OEM it is an aftermarket harness with a 30 amp fuse. Since I have no clue what size the OEM fuse was, I assumed if I use 16 gauge a 30 amp fuse was a no-no.

The relay I was just going to take to the autoparts store and get one that has the same setup only not so cheap. Also I have seen fogs with separate grounds for each light... this harness just has them soldered together and it uses one ground, should I just stick to their layout for simplicity's sake?

You're the man.

OEM fuse is 15amp. I have a full OEM Honda retrofit from a 93 CDM Civic, and this is the what the little OEM label stuck on the fuse box diagram says. Consider this irrefutable evidence.

Both fog lamps can use the same ground, no problem.

Dude, you're the ****... I know this thread has been covered and scouring forums for hours got me no definitive answers. Thank you.

I'll mimic the harness that I got, upgrade relay, run 16 gauge with 15 amp fuse and try to use the switch that came with the kit until I find an OEM. Also I'll snag up the cruise control switch harness from a junkyard so that all the cheap **** is gone.

Appreciate it.

Don't mimic the harness that you've got. Mimic the OEM one. (See my DIY.)

Almost all the info I have given you is in that DIY, btw! (eg., 16ga wiring, fuse amperage)

I've read that DIY, seems legit but I am trying to keep this from getting too difficult. The switch harness has a ground, power to D in fuse box, and connection to under-hood harness I believe. Under-hood harness has the battery, 1 ground for both lights, light connections and connection to switch harness from relay. The original plan was to copy that and just upgrade the parts and wiring gauge.

This way, the fogs will be on when parking lights or headlights are on... which is fine with me. I'm not really trying to convert or change much. All I need to know is if I can mimic the harness I have with better parts and be good to go? Only reason I'm even upgrading anything is bc my last harness melted... installation was done properly but the wiring quality was ****.

Thanks again man

If you mimic the OEM JDM Harness then you can have the fogs ON with your parking lights and/or headlights. If you're looking for a "better" install, then this is the way to do it, NOT to copy the aftermarket wiring. It is altogether a cleaner install with no silly wiring that goes directly to the battery like the aftermarket ones often do.

The oem connectors in the headlight harness were removed and tucked. Instead of going straight to the battery, would the battery connection to the fuse box be any better?

I realize it's still a direct connection, just tryin to get this straight so it's only done once... and stick as close to the current layout as possible.
