flywheel removal help
so im swapping my tranny and ive gotten everything out of the way and now im putting my lightweight flywheel and clutch assembly in. but my flywheel bolts wont come off and when i try to torque them off my flywheel spins... my haynes manual recommends putting a screwdriver into my starter ring teeth to make it now spin but that doesnt work...
anyone done this before that has some input? thanks.

Get a 19 (or 17mm if D series) 1/2 inch socket and ratchet and have it on the crank pully then slam it into the frame so it wont move when you turn. Those bolts are a bitch to take off by hand and easy to strip so be careful.

You'll need to hit the ratchet with a hammer to break the bolts loose.
Other wise you'll end up breaking torque on the crank pulley bolt.
This is one place where a impact gun is priceless.

Flywheel rotates counter clockwise making the crank pully turn clockwise. Put the socket on the crank pully bolt and stop it from spinning by putting the ratchet against the frame or axle. Very simple.

Re: (Luserkid)
Look at it from the flywheel side. As you try and turn the flywheel bolt CCW that turns the Crank bolt with the wrench on it to loosen.
Your idea works for torquing the flywheel bolts.

Yea I know it's a bitch when you pay money for things that done work for the things you really want them for.
The gun needs lots of air, the gun may be ok, you just need a bigger flow from the compressor.
My 3/4" gun works a lot different at 120psi then it does at 150psi.
One compressor will flow more air then another at the same psi. It's why they make so many different compressors. There is one for every job.
I have the Sears big red one, the noisy one.
At work I have the black one 175psi with the same 3/4" Craftsman gun, we break torque on bolts torqued at 500ftlbs.

Glad you got the bolts out. Yes if there messed up you should replace them. You don't want to go to put them in and fine you can't torque them.
I know there like $6.00 each, ouch.
I wonder how the OP is doing? may be he's under his car...

Re: (GSR_hatch936)
yeeesh look at the ones that are stipped... if they look identical maybe besides bolt head pattern then im sure its ok to use... im sure whatever u put in there will be easy to put in but taking it out in the future might be a huge problem if the bolt thread pattern is different... why only chevy and ford? is it because you're in texas???

Not 100% true.. From the factory Honda Flywheel bolts are torqued to 86ft-lb and crank pully bolt is 130ft-lb. The flywheel bolt will break loose before the crank bolt. Also if you have the crank pully tool it will hold it straight.

Re: (Luserkid)
honestly ive heard this problem so much, when i installed my lightweight flywheel i used a half inch ratchet and the bolts broke loss no problem. i would barrow someones impact if i was you. idk why but my car is always a breeze to work on. even the axle nuts came off easily for me. i guess i wish others had my luck.

Re: (DCSportEJ1Civic)
expletive NOTHING has been easy during this swap, all my friends are wondering why its taken me a week to get as far as i have (mainly because i work fulltime and go to school). everyone says how easy stuff is on civics but for some reason everything goes wrong with mine and all my friends are kinda like yeah... your car is a pain in the ***.
anyone else having a problem getting their flywheel off, JUST USE AN IMPACT GUN AT AT LEAST 130 psi, will come off like that

Re: (d[sick]sTeena)
dont get me wrong i understand being busy. i work full time and just started school. nothings easy if you havent done it before. when i did mine i was in my drive way on jackstands. while my jr/sr year in high school i was in auto and had a lift and every tool i could want. but ive had my trans out so many times now that i can change a clutch in about an hour. take your time and do it right. there is a tool also to hold the flywheel by the teeth im sure you could rent at autozone. theres all kinds of different tricks to do it you just have to find out which one is right for you and your car. sometimes an impact isnt the answer.

Re: (DCSportEJ1Civic)
agreed. i usually dont like using an impact gun on anything but in this particular case, im glad i had it. haha i was i coulda gotten this done in a couple hours. this is my first time doing a tranny tho, it actually took longer to do this than it did my whole motor... i didnt forsee needing to replace some of the things that need to be, like bushings or the spring pin in my shift linkage, all that stuff needs to be special ordered which takes time... you can do all of this in 1 or 2 hours? haha it took my longer than that to get my suspension, brakes and axles out!
