Default Fluctuating revs in Idle

Hi
I have a 1998 Honda Civic, and right now when the engine is idle it revs between 1000 and 2000 rpm constantly. The engine is fine when the cars moving.

The car has not been driven for 3 months and there are a few suggestions of what could be the problem:
- water in the petrol tank due to condensation. The tank was 1/4 full for 3 months I have since filled it to half the idling problem is still there. If I fill the tank will this help? I guess not as the water will separate at the bottom - is there a way to drain any water?
- looking at this forum suggests I should clean or replace the Idle air control valve. Should I go for it myself - how much will a garage charge?
- sticky throttle cable (my father suggested this one)

Advice appreciated

Ffion

There's like 2 or three bolts holding the IACV in.
Pull it off, clean it really good with brake cleaner, then put it back on.
It it doesn't fix it, just buy a new one at the parts store, they are relatively cheap.

It could also be a leak in the intake manifold. I had to replace my throttle body gasket in addition to cleaning the IACV.

just spray some starting fluid around the intake manifold and the throttle body, that should tell you if there is a vacuum leak present, also try pulling you intake tube off and plug the hole inside of the throttle body, if plugging the hole fixes the problem then you know you got a bad IAC

Are you sure if you plug the TB hole and the idle goes down its just the IAC/IACV? can a vacuum leak cause suction from the TB hole or is it just the IAC/IACV?

no dont tape or plug it. buy a new IACV or clean the one you have. most likey you should buy one. Also go out and buy brake cleaner, and spray between where the intake manifold meets the engine. if the idle goes down when you do that you also have a vacuum leak.

Please use punctuation. It would make this^ comprehensible.

With the car cold, fill your rad to the top, fill your reservoir to the max line, start car, warm it up until your fans kick on. You'll see bubbles and such from the rad during warm up but by the time your fans come on you should be pretty much air free.

After that top off your rad, put the cap on.. Shut the car off, top off your res to the max line and you're done.
