fluctuating idle? Cold engine only!
Lately here in Indiana it has been getting a little chilly here in the mornings and when I start my car up to go to work the idle will fluctuate between 750 and 1500 rpm's, It is only when the engine is dead cold that it does this, When it warms up after a minute or two it is fine, and idles perfectly.
Any ideas? I think that it may be related to the Fast idle valve. If it is, are all d-series fast idle valves the same? I have a d15b7 in my garage that has a good one on it and I just want to know if I could put it on my z6?

It is the fast idle valve- you could try your B7 valve. As they age they become less accurate- particularly during clightly cold starts. I would probably get a new one. It seems that every FIV that has sat around that I have installed suffers from this same problem. The wax inside must deteriorate or something.

Re: fluctuating idle? Cold engine only! (fixhondas)
If I remember right the fast idle valve has a small wax pellet inside of it that when the engine is cold the valve is open and the wax pellet is pulled back and it basically creates a small vacuum leak. When the coolant temperature starts getting warmer the pellet slowly pushes its way back to the closed position and alows normal engine operation. I could always just pull the valve off and stick a small piece of gasket material or aluminum or something in between the valve and the manifold and this would take care of the problem for good. The only reason for the fast idle valve is for the engine to get up to proper operating temperature quickly right?
