florida exhaust tickets

I tried to do a search, but the words exhaust and modified arent exactly rare, the word modified showed ever edited thread. So sorry I'm not a searching pro here. Anyway...

The other day leaving a parking garage, I notice a cop behind me, its kinda downhill, so i throw it in neutral and coast like 500 ft, lights go one, so the cop NEVER heard my exhaust outside the echo of garage..if it matters) cop comes up to car, says how you doin etc. etc. i said fine and hand them license, regis, insurance, and 50 state legal Tanabe thing, cop says I'm getting a ticket for my modified exhaust, knowing not to question cops, I said thats fine, comes back with it, after i got the ticket, i ask out of curiousity how many camaros or firebirds they have pulled over for exhaust, none, oh big suprise, I go on my way.

Now the header I have for my 99 B18b in my 97 HB wont work with the facotry exhaust, so I cant do that, and I'm gonna have to drive from Orlando to Tampa to fight this, and im a broke college kid, so driving all the way there and losing will prolly result in me driving off a bridge on the way home, jk

if anyone can help me with this, or has fought a exhaust ticket in Florida and won, please help, thanks!!

If you show them the paper from Tanabe that says the exhaust is 50 state legal they should let you off.

The cop said 50 state legal means nothing to her (like 55 year old ugly lady cop), that it is modified, I plan on bringing this to court, just looking for more ammo for my case

in florida we dont have emissions or dB testing or anything like that (to my knowledge) but I dont think its the sound itself, its more im breaking the law because that muffler is NOT stock

thanks for the replies folks

electronb16si 08-07-2004 02:10 PM

Yea it doesn't mean anything to cops. They are still going to give you a ticket for having a non factory exhaust. What I am saying is that the judge will let you off because it is proven to be a legal part in all 50 states.

50 State legal doesnt mean anything in FL cause thats CA type BS... lol

What Statute # did she write you under? It should be towards the bottom of the ticket.

As far as fighting it goes... Well the ticket should be $68.50... how much is it gonna cost you to get to court and fight it? If you win the best you'll get is they throw it out. If you lose then its time + $68.50 + fees

Andres-eh2 08-07-2004 08:36 PM

i just went to court this past thurday for an 'unreasonable noise' ticket. went out purchased a silencer for my n1 and got it dismmissed. the cop did a checkpoint and didnt even hear my car then he looked in the back and gave me a ticket for it.

the ticket is 78 i believe, 70 something, 5$ fees, its gonna cost like 15$ in gas to get there, time isnt a problem cause im moving to orlando soon, no tues thurs class and won't have a job yet

I'll get the citation # tomorrow, car is outside and its raining, imagine that, rain in florida

thanks for the posts

btw about the silencer, one for a tanabe is like 91$, id rather do that than just pay the ticket

*thinks about sellin his exhaust*

Re: (g0ni)

If the judge or the cop tries to tell you that any aftermarket exhaust is illegal, tell them that they should then pull over everybody who goes to Meineke, Car X, etc.

You can't even buy an OEM exhaust for most cars over 10 years old. Do cops think before they open their mouth, or their ticket book?

Andres-eh2 08-07-2004 10:39 PM

if its illegal to modify an exhaust which is the same as having something other than stock, it should be against the law for ppl to sell an exhaust...

T-RO 08-08-2004 04:29 AM

Alot of things are sold "For Off Road Use Only" and shit like that.

Re: (T-RO)

there s read somewhere where someone got a device that can measure
the noise level of the exhaust..went to court

the judge was so curious about the device they went out to the parking lot to see
how it work d..*DISMISS D*

with any catback..its not going to violate any emmision law..not even in calif.
its the noise level that they try to get u on..

as for them giving u a ticket for a modified exhaust..they have to prove that
it was for the purpose of increasing the noise level allow d by local jurisdictions

luckily..my son is register d as an occasional user on my registration..he s with
Oakland, PD..much respect with CHP..so they pretty much let go for anything..
its those meter maids that are my greatest fear

316.610 is the statute #...and its 73$

ironically enough, in super ricer(street) magazine, it has a lil thing on how to get out of the ticket, not really good info for non cali people, just ironic

Re: florida exhaust tickets (g0ni)

So what is 50 state legal and what is not on your car? I would say that anything that has to do with exhaust that's not legal is gonna bust ya hard. So if your header is legal and your cat and cat back are legal, I'd say you're good. Also, remember, its your word against his. Consider your previous altercations (if any). Good luck man, and let us know the results.

Re: florida exhaust tickets (Mistamike17)

stock ls header, cat, tanabe cat back, all is supposed to be legal

50 state legal is the guarentee that their exhaust fits with all laws and its legal for your car, more people I talk to, more say to cops its illegal, to judges it is not, they are just harassing, we should start a class action suit on this harassment https://honda-tech.com/forums/images...es/emsmile.gif

Re: florida exhaust tickets (g0ni)

If you don't get out of it, I would take it to Tanabe... They should pay your ticket if you can't get out of it.

good idea, I should email them asking what their stance is on this, and if they stand behind their 50 state legal

Make sure that you mention that the gaurantee was the only reason you went with Tanabe and you have a bunch of friends who are thinking about buying them if they stand behind their promises. https://honda-tech.com/forums/images/smilies/emthup.gif https://honda-tech.com/forums/images/smilies/emthup.gif https://honda-tech.com/forums/images/smilies/emthup.gif https://honda-tech.com/forums/images/smilies/emwink.gif

BoostinEJ1 08-09-2004 07:37 PM

This is the price you pay to have a larger exhaust, I myself have an Apexi N1 and I get pulled over all the time. I pull out the silencer, tell them I lost the bolt and thats why it is out right now and they say have a nice day. Never seems to fail.

Also this is a little of topic but I got a ticket a few months ago for having purple neons under my car. So I went to court and made an ass out of the cop when I explained how they are just purple lower control arms (SRR) and not lights and that obviously got thrown out. Cops are stupid and annoying sometimes.

Re: (JdmEGHatch6)

Cop pulled me and a buddy over not too long ago about his exhaust. He wasnt being loud but he noticed us and decided to make an example of us to the officer he was training. Told us that Orlando cops are going to start cracking down on cars with exhausts or typical street racers. Then he told us that we had to get a baffle for it followed by some inexperienced crap talk about street racers and their cars. If you can go out of your way, then maybe fight it, otherwise paying the ticket and mailing Tanabe the bill isnt a bad idea.

"Ya need a baffle for dat d'er car"

All pigs in florida are stupid...(or atleast the ones ive dealt with) Make sure you fight that shit. I've won every case against a cop here in Orlando because they are all ignorant and incompetent. https://honda-tech.com/forums/images...s/emthdown.gif to Florida's cops - wasting our tax dollars, as if we werent already hurting enough economically.

Re: (Chris M)

Yeah a lot of 'em are stubborn, ignorant jack-asses just out to get you but there are some great cops. Don't hate on them all. Most will be cool if you let them.

McNizzle 08-09-2004 08:48 PM

Re: (Revolver)

True....I bet it has to do a lot with Florida being among the lowest ranking states in education. These cops are probably Florida grown! https://honda-tech.com/forums/images...s/emsmilep.gif Sorry if any of you people reading this thead is a Florida officer, but I have had some bad experiences with ignorant cops trying to start crap with me for no reason except for the fact of me having a suped up looking Honda.

Revolver 08-09-2004 08:57 PM

Re: (Chris M)

Cruel, but may very well be true. Cops will be cops, most are biased and will just do what they want. Not too much anybody can do about it.
