Default Fix or Swap?

Hey guys, first post on Honda tech. At first I came here to ask what the scraping noise was on my 95 Del Sol that I bought a few days ago...but judging by what I have read on this site, 99% sure it's my ISB. (Apparently a common problem with the 90s D series..? )

So, I have 3 questions:

- First off, how long can I drive it with a bad ISB? It only seems to make the noise 1st and 2nd gears... a little in 3rd when I'm slowing down about to downshift...

-Second, I plan on eventually swapping in a b18 series into the car... That being said then, should I a) Fix the ISB and keep the stock tranny. b) Replace with another D-series tranny. or c) Put in a B series tranny, so that it will be ready for the full engine swap. ?

-Lastly, if you guys think it'd be a better call to put a B-series tranny in, should I still take it apart and replace the ISB like I would if I put another D-series in? I read that most used ones you get may as well be replaced before being put in the engine.

Only spent 1600 on the car, so I have a little breathing room financially. But not much. All the work will be done by me and my buddy.
This is my first Honda, though I've always loved them. Hopefully it was a good investment.
Thanks!

the bearing is cheap enough. if you think you're good with wrenches it can easily be replaced.

you can't just put a b series transmission in. it's a lot more than that. you'll need a d2b kit.

Well I've never taken apart a tranny before...

But okay thanks, didn't know if that was possible or not...

If you own a D series it only accepts a D series transmission, B series only except a B series transmission. F's and H's are interchangable. The bearing is $10-$25 depending on if you get an aftermarket bearing or OEM. It all comes down to you being able to seperate the case and replace the bearing successfully.

I just replaced a ISB by myself and I had never touched a tranny before. Look for the FSM and print out the pages.

I replaced the ISB and the seal that is under it + the shaft seals coming out to about 55 bucks or something.

Its a great learning experience

you may want to first take it apart to check the syncros to see if its worth doing. Once you have it open make sure to clean out all the little plastic pieces from the old ISB. There are some step by step posts on how to do it.
