I have seen a bunch of pictures with a little breather filter on the back of the valve cover. does this do anything and if so what? Thanks

Seen this myself. Also heard it's better than the stock line that runsfrom the valve cover to the air intake. Mechanic says it prevents the sludge build up from the engine from etering the intake. Can anyone enlighten?

It just helps to keep your throttle body and intake manifold a little cleaner by not allowing the oily fumes from the valvecover to go back into the engine to be burned for emissions purposes. It's absolutely illegal to have if you live in CA.

theres usually a hose that goes from the intake to that nipple on the valve cover...but really dont need it..if its missing, and if you feel that nipple while the car is one, you'll notice that its suckin air in....and you dont want any type of dirt and stuff to go into you motor now do you???thats what the filter is there for...to filter....

well, here's my next question. the hose on my valve cover runs into the side of my AEM cold air intake, so could I remove that hose and put a filter on my valve cover and not mess anything up or would that all just be pointless?

yea, thats what i did but you will want to block that piece on the intake pipe....go to Autozone and pick up some plugs...

A catch can would be better, isn't it pushing oily gases out, meaning it's just going to dirty up the filter. It's not sucking right? I have one myself

so is there any kind of perfomance change?(I know it won't be a big one if any) and just go to autozone and get what? a rubber plug to stick in the hole on the side of my intake. I like the way this filter thing looks so I would really like to do it.

yea...they're called RUBBER VACUUM CAPS....just ask a worker there and they'll show you where the are...comes in like a small purple package with a BLACK strip on the bottom that says VACU-TITE

i dont think there is any performance gain between anything for that. just maybe keeping things cleaner, which in that case is not a bad thing. i have a breather thing.

The filter would block air flow more that it would help. It is best to run a catch can or just leave the hose attached to the intake. U wont notice any performance gains from the little filter. they are just for looks.

catch cans are not for looks they serve the purpose as to keep your head cleaner I thought. No performance, but every mod is not for performance.

Who says every modification has to add power? Do you not agree that this mod will help keep your throttle body and intake cleaner?

I have one on my car.

At 7500+ RPMs the PCV system doesn't have enough flow to keep the crankcase pressure down so it pressurizes. I've found that extended high RPM running pushes oil out the breather hole and into the intake manifold where it's sucked down and burned by the engine. My oil consumption went away when I switched to the filter. A catch can would be even better because, as someone else pointed out, it would keep things alow cleaner. If I get the chance to install a catch can I will.

yes it keeps oilygunk out of your intake but if u use just a filter it just goes back into the engine...more oily gunk in the engine
get a catch can
trap all that gunk in it
otherwise youll just windup having a nasty dripping filter sitting on your vc

i would imagine having the filter on the head would only suck up hotter air then if you had the tube from intake to head?

When you use the filter, it doesn't go back into the motor, but you'll get some seepage onto the backside of the motor. That's why I'm probably getting a catch can.

As for the temp of the air, when you're running hard, air's coming out of the breather, not in, because of the pumping action of the pistons.

There is no performance gain by using a filter on the valve cover. It's really supposed to be run back into the intake, but this can cause some build up inside the intake manifold from the oil. In contrast, the filter can also allow oil to seap out thru the filter, however, I've never seen this happen. I personally ran a filter on the valve cover and never had a problem. It's mainly your preference based on what you have done to the intake and what not. Some short rams I used in the past didn't have the connection for the hose.

so if u were to put a filter on the valve cover, do you have to block off the other lines that run to it... im gonna get a pic of what mine looks like now and see what u guys think
