A/C intermittent problem

A/C intermittent problem
I have search but could not find anything that relates to my specific problem. I have a 97 Civic Hatchback. I have never touched or messed with any of the A/C components. I started having issues with my A/C, when I turn it on sometimes it will not come on at all, but if I tap or bang under the passenger side dash it will kick in. I am thinking something might be loose or one of the components is going bad. When the A/C kicks in, it works fine, no problems, the problem is trying to get it to kick in. Any help would be very appreciated.

When the A/C does NOT work:
1) Does the A/C button light illuminate when the button is pressed?
2) Does the A/C condenser fan run when the button is pressed?
3) Does the A/C compressor clutch engage when the button is pressed?

thats what it sounds like. does it not work on any of the fan settings?
typically when electric motors die, you can slap them and they'll run for a little bit or untill turned off, or maybe just a turn or two.
if you look under the dash behind the glove box, you'll see a round lid-looking piece and that is the top of the blower motor. one electric plug and i think three bolts hold it up there.

No, I don't have the means to do that right now. What I am saying is that whenever it kicks in I don't have any problems, it won't shut off or stop blowing or anything like that. The problem I have is that sometimes it takes a slap to make it kick in.

Re: A/C intermittent problem
It is the AC relay in the underhood fuse panel. There are 3 in my Accord. 2 for AC and 1 for radiator.
Just swap out the relays to see if the problem goes away; if it does fix problem, put relays back in original order and go to partsgeek and order the replacement relay. $7
