quick question fellas, I am doing my driver side 2morrow. I actually have an automatic integra. Is the process any harder/easier? Also, I have an air compressor (3 gallon, 1.5 hp) I was thinking about picking up a cheap air gun from harbor frieght, do you guys think thats a good idea? Thanks fellas and Tom

It's somewhat similiar, but the balljoint/lower control arm is inverted on the 2.5TL, and the tranny fluid *shouldn't* be a problem as it's an automatic. Unless someone way overfilled the tranny fluid none should come out.

Also the axle nut will be a 36mm, not a 32mm as I described on the Civic/Integra.

Hey I'll be doing this on my brothers 97dx auto civic. Does anyone here know how much ATF fluid to use? Also does anyone know the tq settings for the bolts?

I just did this to my 98 ex auto this weekend. According to my huge 1000+ page Honda Service Manual , you need 2.9 qts of ATF. To anyone that wanted to know, the process is the same for an auto. Took me about an hour to do. I had no problems taking the axle nut off, no problems at all. Hey bboixtc, what bolts did you want to know the tq settings for? Ill look it up.

Yes, this is the same for a D. It was step by step for me and my D16Y8 automatic.

I have a 1991 Civic. Will this procedure work on my car?

yup, almost identical for the 91 Civic.

Torque specs:

Spindle nut: 134 fl lbs. This is critical, as it's also the preload for the wheel bearing. Too loose can cause premature failure, and same if it's overtightened.

Damper fork lower nut is 46 ft lbs(just get it tight)

And the ball joint is 36-43 ft lbs- whatever it takes to line up the castle nut with the hole for cotter pin installation. This is critical as well, if you overtighten this nut, you will over street the ball joint and cause future issues. The most common is a joint that spins when you try and remove the nut

I always have this problem!

Not enough leverage to pry it off - and not enough room to smack it 'real good' with a hammer, sooo...

What I do is pry it as much as I can, keep the pressure on the pry bar, then tap the bearing cup with a hammer at the same time.

LoL!

This is quite a trick when you're by yourself, laying under your ride... but that's the way I do it.

A lot of cussing seems to help too!

quick, question. when putting the drivers side inner axle back on does it sit flush? i just put mine back in and im showing about half inch of metal? It also wiggles just a lil bit. im guessing i need to cuss at it it more and shove it all the way in. can someone confirm or have pictures of the drivers side fully installed?

Does this sound like a bad axle and would this DIY pretty much apply to 2001 Accord EX?

Very nice write up. I wanted to see if anyone knew if running abs axels on a none abs car will cause any clearance issues? The shop that got my axels ordered abs, I was told you can take the ring off but I didn’t want to gank the axels up to much so I just installed them w/ the abs ring still on. When I do make a hard right turn I can hear a clicking or small grinding and I haven’t been able to see what it was yet as I just swapped out the axels yesterday.

You should be just fine. I've been running an ABS axle on my non ABS civic for years without any issues.
