Default fan circuit

im running the wire to both ends on the plug of the sensor on the thermostat housing and it turns the fan on for while, but eventually the fan stops working. I dont know if this is causing the realy to overheat, but once i come to a stop for a few minutes it often over heats, or it over heats while im driving, even when the air is getting through to radiator. thermostat is new, water pump is good.
