Fake AEM intake with pic
I could'nt afford the whole thing so I just bought the filter.
It takes perfect advantage of my carbon hood fitting like **** so now I can lift up the back a bit to be mad tite JDM.
The rain gutter cover is now a flat piece being made so it's like a reverse cowl induction without the crappy 70's chevy look

Unless if the motor is built it wont make a difference if he had a CAI or this. Ive seen people just put the filter on the throttle body and leave it at that. Looks cleaner if its the right filter IMO

Re: Fake AEM intake with pic (ukdm crx)
i was driving around with a shitty cai, it fell off.. because i had been to lazy to replace the clamp on the tb (the previous owner must have lost it) i just put the silicon thing around the throttlebody. well anyways.. i drove around for days with no intake.. just open tb... seeing how long it would last... it felt stronger and had great response... and sounded mean.. hahaha

Re: Fake AEM intake with pic (dmoto)
If you get the filter out from behind the engine it makes a big difference with intake air temp. You don't want to suck hot air blowing off the engine. That filter looks pretty far out from the intake on that pic. I have seen cheap APC filters sitting 2" off the mani though.. HA.
I am not a fan of CAI.. I think a short ram at 30mph does the same thing. Well in fact it does.. I have tested the theory with my cheap radio shack in door/out door thermometer.. oh yea!

a short ram put the filter in the hottest spot next to the header. Where the filter is at now is about 4in from fresh air. Unless you cut a hole in the bumper or take off the mud gaurds a CAI is alot more isolated. The filter I got long to clear the fuel filter and to smooth the airflow before the runners a bit.
It pulls alot better than I expected since it's a 170,000 mile d15 with a serious need for tuning and an alignment.

The length and diameter of the intake pipe determine where on the dyno graph you increase and decrease hp. And yes, with that setup, you will be decreasing hp in much of your useable rpm range compared to stock. It is simply too short and wont make its power gains until upwards of 8000 rpm I'd wager. On the other hand, it will be much growlier and give you excellent throttle response, leading you to believe you've gained power. But if you could see the dyno graph, you would not be happy.
Only thing you can do with a setup like that is ram air into it, but not on a street driven vehicle.
My main purpose in responding is to point out that this intake has absolutely nothing to do with AEM. Just because you use the AEM badged filter which is really a K&N, it doesn't make it in any way similar to the AEM intake which was dyno tuned adjusting the length and diameter to make it peak just right to get their intake 1 hp over the competition so that they could make the most money. Unfortunately, that was done for the particular engine they were using and isn't optimized for all the other motors included in their list of applications. Basically what I'm saying is why would you want to emulate AEM when you could do so much better. What you want to do is get a short ram, shield and insulate it from engine heat, then get an induction funnel in your bumper and ram the air up to the filter.

A: you can't tune raim air or CAI's properly on a dyno = useless
B: the title was more of a joke
C: AEM's filters feature a built in velocity stack unlike many others.
D: That setup provides the least restriction most aiflow possible, nothing other than an even bigger filter or ITB's will out flow it
E: it's not going to get heatsoak driving since the rear of the hood is lifted and the wiper cowl is flat allowing lower temp air flow passing over the hood to replace air under the hood
F: This will be pretty accurate on an open hood dyno run with a fan though @ speed it may run a little leaner.
G: The runner size still dictates the maximum airlfow into the cylinder head and this has'nt changed much I've just reduced the pumping loses a bit
with a more street based unteuned seup without the hood mod a CAI would be better but I don't have that

damn clean engine bay . im guessing you moved your battery to the back of the car since i dont see it in the pic, but wheres your fuse box relocated to?

Re: Fake AEM intake with pic (slow94coupe)
AEM filters have a velocity stack? Where? What are you smoking? Its cone shaped? Apexi filters make a hp more than the AEM/K&N filters. Apexis have the dimple, the rouned inside, and a better non oil type filter material that filters finer particles and flows better than the AEM POS.
Max air flow does not equal max power. You can increase air flow a great deal by porting out the head, but check the results and you'll notice that you've lost power. Try a bigger throttle body. Big increase on the flow bench, but a loss in power. Also rethink what I said. Power may have increased with your filter-on-manifold, but not until a RPM that you'll never use. A longer intake pipe will make power increases over a more useable rpm range. You think this idea is new? It's been tried and abandoned. A simple dyno test of your setup vs a short ram setup will change your mind.
What kind of tuning? Aftermarket ECU tuning? Sure you can tune it on the dyno. Use the fan on the dyno for CAIs and ram air. Then take it for a drive with a laptop and let it auto tune or have a passenger tune the AF. Make datalogs.
Tuning as in trying different length and diameter pipes and doing dyno pulls to see how it affects your power band? How is that useless?
Heatsoak isn't the only issue. The temp of the air being drawn in is a major factor.
**** CAIs anyway. **** AEM.

no, you stupid 04 member, it looks clean cause you cant see any of the wiring harness, the battery or anything for that matter, STFU and GTFO!

AEM filters are no longer made by K&N and if you reach up into one you will feel it mushrooms out instead of being flat. Personnally I would not trust my engine to a dry foam filter that will be exposed to the elements
I do like you assumptions but unfourtunately I already have a bigger TB it's a 62mm ported LS and I did the port match work on the IM myself so it was as close to perfect as possible. Considering the fact it pulls all way from 700 rpm 6750 considerably faster than it used to I'm happy with the results. So much faster that from 25~60 it hangs with a stock s2000 and I know there are a whole bunch of things that I am working on like a newly discovered crack in on the injector casings, alignment and no tuning yet. I will be sticking with this even after I finish my other motor.
Right now my valvecover breather is teed into the block breather hose and into the IM just so it idles steady, I am looking at catch cans that have return lines and they will both be ran into that and back to the IM. since I'm only driving the car very short distances to gradually break in the header and exhaust paint and to work on the many minor chasis issues inherent to a del sol it's not going to kill anything
The strut bar is made by edlebrock, it's MSRP is 140 but I've seen them for 120 on EGAY
And don't attempt the wiring unless you have a few days lots of tape/tools and patience
