Fair price for a 94 CX?
I was just cruising around today and saw a white hatch in a dealership lot. I pulled over and found that it was a 94 CX. It's not in a bad shape, but not good, either.
Here is the good:
- Engine sounds good and pulls strong.
- Interior in good shape.
- ~146k miles
- No accidents (Carfax verified) and maybe 2 owners max.
- All body panels seem straight.
The bad:
- Throwout bearing is going out
- Hatch struts missing
- Rust spots here and there (small, nothing major)
- Front bumper is peeling like crazy
- Sounds like the front CV joints are shot and needs struts, too.
- No maintenance record.
- Muffler rusted out.
- Front windows hard as h311 to crank up and down??
- Front lens cracked.
- Tires are gone.
They initially asked $3995, but I got them down to $2000 OTD. What do you guys think? I really wanted $1800 OTD and thought that was a fair price considering the items that needs attention. They told me that they are into it $1500, but I know they've got to make a living, too, and I don't mind them making money, but still, it's my hard earned cash, too.
BTW, this will just be a commuter for a short while (hate racking up mileage on my 4Runner. Plus MPG sucks). and in spring, a heart transplant is in order. I think I'll have them meet me half way at $1900 OTD.
If the deal goes through, I am excited to finally get a hatch. I've wanted one for a long time. Plus, I'll finally have another Honda in the stable.

yeah, the problem is, there aren't much old ladies left with eg civics. either thay have passed, or have sold it already.
op, 1800 isn't bad. but if you are dedicated and have set some goals (short and long), and ready to spend some serious cash and time, then i say go for it.

Not a bad price, I paid 1500 for mine w/ no rust but it had other issues, some the same as yours. But anyway those things sell like hotcakes, if you don't buy it someone else will for sure.

Re: (Ron454321)
I got mine for $2650 from my sister who paid $4500 for it in 2002. Same year/model/color. It was flawless though, original paint, complete inside and out, pretty much virgin, engine had 106,xxx on it. Based on your description, I personally would justify paying a MAXIMUM of $1500. Bargain it down, the worst that could happen is they say no. All the things you listed as negatives are really superficial and can be fixed in a day if you push it (minus rust and paint). To me, as long as it is straight and the motor is sound, then anything else can be fixed relatively easy.

That is what I would say, maybe even a little cheaper. Needs tires, needs a throwout bearing, 146K, cracked lense, muffler rotted out, needs CV's and struts????? Pics would help, but either way, if the best they can do is $1900, Id say dont buy it. Its not super hard work to replace the things that need replacing, nor are they super expensive. But, if you arent going to do all of the work, you can expect a pretty hefty labor bill for the work that needs to be done. If you pay $1900 for it, then buy the parts, then pay someone to do it, you might be looking at 2500-3000+ all togeather, car included. I wouldnt pay $3000 for a car with 146K miles, and rust on it, even just a little rust. I got my 94 CX with only 65K on it, with NO rust, and didnt need anything, for $2800. Do some more looking around in my opinion.

OP: dope deal. since you know what its missing and what it needs. it shouldnt be hard to fix. and you still got a nice healthy engine with less than 200k miles. try to go for 1800...thats a deal.
EDIT: think about how much gas you would save...

Well, thanks for all of the replies. Upon second thought, I am going to pass. If they call me back and accept my $1800 offer, maybe I'll consider it. They really want to get it off the lot, though, since nobody wants it due to the lack of PS, PW, etc.
Once again, thanks for all the inputs and insights. Search goes on.
