failed smog test, 2x
went to get my smog test today, failed twice, '92 Civic Hatch CX D15B only mod i have is an AEM Intake, had high HC PPM readings on both the first and second test, i adjusted the timing from 10BTDC on the first to 14BTDC on the second test and on the second test it messed up my CO reading also
test #1 at 10BTDC. result the HC Parts Per Million reading at 15mph was too high
at 15mph measured 164, average 38, max 96
at 25mph measured 119, average 30, max 79
now on my first test the only thing i failed was the HC
test #2 at 14BTDC. result the HC Parts Per Million reading
at 15mph went down but still too high, measured 115, average 38, max 96
(it went down by 49 ppm but still not enough)
at 25mph measured 189, average 30, max 79
(i have no idea why it jumped from 119 on the first test to 189, could it be because i adjusted the timing higher?)
now also on my second test my CO reading failed
at 15mph measured 0.64, average 0.14, max 0.59
(1st test at 15mph measured 0.58, average 0.14, max 0.59)
at 25mph measured 0.59, average 0.11, max 0.51
(1st test at 25mph measured 0.27, average 0.11, max 0.51)
the smog technician said to raise the timing up to 16BTDC
any help and advice would be appreciated

Re: failed smog test, 2x
No CEL on, the Mechanic i went to who adjusted the Distributor did checked my spark plugs, he took a quick look then started fiddling with the distributor, i just bought the car a month ago the owner before me said he had installed new spark plugs, and wires but i think he was bsing, when i start up the car it lags a bit to start up, i always thought it did that because it's old and has 228k miles or that it was the starter, the engine runs normal, it's not cold at all, before i took it to get smogged i made sure it was properly heated/warmed up
