Default Failed Smog :(

Ok well ive been trying to get my car running correct to get smog taken care of...
Setup:
95 civic
d15b7 Block
D16z6 Head
2.25" Exhaust

Motor used to have a Cold Air and Header but i removed them in exchange for OEM Air Box With K&N Filter and the Oem 95 Civic Cx Header (One with the CAT for the bottom Part). My timing might be very slightly advanced and i idle at 1000 rpm.
I also recently did an oil change and spark plugs (NGK)

I cant seem to lower the "HC PPM" or the "CO%" Which if im not mistaken would be from running rich.

My Readings Are:

-------------
HC PPM
240
Needs 70

CO%
2.2
Needs 0.9

CO2%
13.4

NO PPM
22

O2%
0.2
------------

They Say I need a new CAT though. I dont wanna go out and get one then not solve it. This cat is the one ive used for smog every 2 years. When im done it comes off and sits around. Could it be bad?

This Smog place is a little Mexican shop so they don't pay attention to all the little stuff like timing and what motor it is and all that so is there any little tricks i can do to pass? I just need Good Numbers...

Someone Please Help

Use premium gas with a can or two of octane boost in it. Drive the **** out of it on the way over there.

Bump the idle up a bit more.

I coudnt pass smog a few weeks ago. HC was three times my max. then I tried...
Lucas Fuel Treatment
Cap & Rotor
Spark Plugs
Still didnt pass...then i tried
Heavier oil (20W50)
Warm Engine
Timing adjustment
Heet Fuel treatment x2.
I passed smog with decent results

run 87 octane, running a higher octane will put more HC in the exhaust do to an incomplete burn. 87 will burn faster in the combustion chamber resulting in less HC's in the exhaust. What ECU are you running, P28 or is it chipped to P28 status?

I've heard put a bottle of the highest alchohol you can find in the gas yes rubbing acohol and give your car a vaccum leak. small one.

sounds like you running rich and combustion chambers are hot thats why the co level is high. what computer are you running. if you are running a chipped p28 or something youe gotta get rid of it and run a stock ecu

.2 left over O2 seems like the cat was using the O2. How about an O2 sensor, have you replaced it yet?

How far was it retarded? More than 4-5degrees would cause a jump in HC and CO being that the timing is sparking on the down stroke.

Set the timing to spec
I agree run 87 octane.
Run some injector cleaner thru the system via the gas tank.
Replace the O2 sensor and you should be good to go.

Unless you do not have the stock ECU or really gooped up injectors.

Not trying to thread jack but, how would running higher octane affect emissions test? I mean I drive a 97 EJ8 with 89. Is that a bad idea? I mean I've been trying to figure out why I barely passed emissions due to high HC basically max was 66 and I measured 66. Also my mpg is way low. I get around 23-25 at best. And that's granny shifting at 3000rpm and even cruising on the streets in 5th gear. Any pointers?

Our book say's that we are suppose to say: run what the manufacture recommends.

The ecu is not tuned to run 89. Timing is affected. Usually with more octane more timing is needed.

How the test is run is once your numbers are below the max for 5 seconds it passes that part of the test and continues. The test numbers are not how you are running it just says that you are running good enough to pass.

If you are all stock then it might be time for an O2 sensor or if you have an exhaust leak it could mess with your A/F ratios along with the ECU seeing a false condition like a coolant temp sensor that is reading high. When the ECU see's this condition it would try to add more fuel to cool the motor down. Same with the IAT if it is not reading correct and giving the wrong info to the ECU it would mess with A/F ratios...

So......basically.....don't run 89???? I don't have the book so I wouldn't know. I always use 89 cuz for some reason it lasts more. So can I just get a clear answer. Also do you have a pic of where the temp should sit at? I mean my fan turns on a lot very frequently,im starting to think if I even have a thermo on? I just bought the car so I wouldn't know.

I run all three 87 89 and 91 It just depends for me. I mostly run 89 and have my timing advanced a degree or two. It is up to you.

My temp guage sits right on the bottom of the symbol. I can barely see the bottom of it. So just below the middle.

You might need a new fan switch if the fan's are always coming on.

My old thermostat was stuck open and the highest temp was only 1/3 from cold. and I got terrible gas mileage being that I only work 6 mi from my house.

Hope this helps...Yeah it's 6 o clock I'm out of here.
