Failed Oregon emissions. Had questions on how to solve it
Hey guys, so I barely failed the HC test for emissions. The standard was 220 and my HC level was 250 for the first idle and 227 for the second idle. Oregon emissions don't run your car, they only test when it's idle. The guy told my to test it again to see if it would pass, but when I did, the HC level was 248 the fisrt idle and 250 the second idle.
Any suggestions on what i can do to make the level go down? I passed everything else.
I have a 92 si with a new oil change, spark plugs, spark plug wires, and 2 year old cat.
Thanks in advance.

go to wall mart they have a code reader for 60$. its blue. pick that up. go home and plug it in, if it says that you have trown a code look it up in the book provided. then fix what applies to the sensor that is throwing a code.
if that does not work go with plan b. drive through deq and clear the code reader white you wait in line. that is how my b2ovtec passed.

Nice. Is that in the automotive dept at Wal Mart? Is there a brand name the code reader goes by?

Get one of those "sure pass" products and call it a day. They aren't great but you barely failed so it will probably do it. My winter car was just barely failing, put the stuff in the tank, followed the directions, some of the e-test readings were 0.
Air filter, pcv valve? Also make sure they test the car when it is good and warmed up and a tank of 93 probably couldn't hurt.
Or you could do what I do and go to school where you don't need to do emissions testing and register your license there!

run some 93 octane after you almost have the tank drained to nothing...goto autozone or another parts store and grab a bottle of emissions test passer. and just for good measure put in a little bit of alcohol into the tank...anything that's as close to 100% alcohol as possible...helped me pass with almost 0 emmisions the 2nd time around for my beater car after failing horribly.

hehe yeah i was thinking of starting with that first and changing my oil again. if that doesn't work, then i'll find something else. hopefully that will clean up the extra fuel.

dont be a dick, not everyone has money to just go out and buy a new car.
come live in newberg, we dont have DEQ tests.

Re: Failed Oregon emissions. Had questions on how to solve it (oo3)
Just wanted to give people a heads up on my progress. I went to DEQ again today and passed. Here's what I did to my car:
bosch platinum +2 plugs (earlier I only had the Plus)
new distributor cap (didn't install the rotor cuz the screw holding it in was stripped.)
regular gas (before I had premium)
"garunteed to pass emissions" injector cleaning thing you put in your gas.
Earlier, my HC level was at 227, 248 and 250 (all different runs) and the standard is 220. After I did all the above, my HC level went all the way down to 41.
I hope this helps other people who need to fix their HC level.
I also got new plates since mine was all warped. I got the Cultural Trust plates cuz on the side it has CU which means ***** in Vietnamese...haha
