Well I got reff and I failed my emission and I was wondering what could cause this dramatic number difference. Could it be the fuel evaporative controls unplugged?

guessing...
did you do a tune up before the check?
it makes a notable difference in the numbers.

also in case you havn't done so recently, the O2 may be going bad on you, but it isn't bad enought to set the CEL yet.

i had a 88 crx and it failed emissions i put a bottle of rubbing alchohol in the gas and went back through and passed

I changed my oil, spark plugs etc. And i just changed the o2 sensor maybe a few months ago.

No mods. Everything stock. d16z6 with a p28

it was safe for me i guess it never caused problems...just 1 small bottle in your gastank

I'm going to have to look into that first.

Any other ideas that could cause the problem?

heat works the same way as the rubbing alchohol.

distributor cap?
rotor?
plug wires?
check the ignition timing?
do you use any oil?

I just read something about that it cleans the gunk out of your fuel tank. But using alcohol does some fishy.

Anyone know about the fuel evaporative controls?? Do you guys think that is what throwing those numbers

seems a little far fetched to be true, anyone know more on this?

if u end up trying this plz post the results so we can compare the emission level. im really interested to know if/how much of a difference this makes, as my friends sohc zc failed with high NO.... even after a full tune up, valve lash adj, and cat=(

i had a b18a1 hatch that failed terribly, i went to shucks and got like a 5 dsollar bottle of no pass or some **** liek that ask the guy for it and put it in drove a tank of gas filled back up w went through passed like a charm its gaurenteed to work or money back didnt mess up the car or anything soo... worth trying its 5 bucks

I dont think I could just put a bottle of chemical and it will dramatically drop my numbers in half. There has to be something that is off.

Yeah, warm that **** up nice and good. I remember with my 95 camry I failed... all I did the second time was warm that bitch up for a long time another day and passed

Its fine. Maybe i should warm that sucka up alot more. I warmed it up before I got there but it took them too long to actually smogged it so maybe it got cold, but ill give that a try. Any other ideas?

I would have your 02 sensor checked. You still have o2 in the exhaust which means the cat was either not warmed up enough or it is not getting the proper mixture.

How long have you had the cat on? has it been sitting?

I just recently changed my o2 and the cat has just been sitting around. Could it be that?

If you put it on and drove it in there...YES. The cat will oxidize and the oxidation will reduce it's efficiency. you should have ran it high in the rpm's for at least 30 minutes to burn of the oxidation.

Now if you put it on and drove it a few days then NO.

You said that you changed out the o2 sensor a few months ago, I had one that only lasted six months. That is why I said check it out.

now yes alcohol does work because the byproduct of alcohol is less than that of gasoline when it is combusted... but rubbing alcohol i wouldnt try it i have heard that denatured alcohol will work but havnt had any personal experiences with it... as far as timing retard it to 2 degrees under standard should lower the nox a lil bit but from those numbers i would say you were running rich at the start or your cat is shot or it was cooled off by the time they started or like everyone else said check the o2 sensor those things are really sensitive and im assuming you didnt opt for a new oem one but one from pepboys autozone or something like that... im not a mechanic but have taken a few classes and prefer to do everything my self so i have learned from mine and friends experiences.. best of luck..
