failed BAR due to high emissions how to fix? smog gurus help?
Failed Sniffer at BAR ref:
15mph---1878 RPM
CO2 %- 14.7
O2 % - 0.2
HC (PPM) - 146 <-- failed
CO% - .49 <--high
NO (PPM) - 2204 <--failed
25mph---2315 RPM
CO2 %- 15.1
O2 % - 0.0
HC (PPM) - 49
CO% - .12
NO (PPM) - 304
any idea what could be wrong.
setup is JDM B18C1 GSR with civic catco cat and stock everything else running to apexi ws2 exhaust.
From the search most ppl say it would be a cat issue. any confirmations?
not sure if catco makes three chambered cats. so wondering if i'm running a single chamber cat instead of a three chambered cat.
TIA

Yea that looks like the cat was completely cold. How long did the car sit before it went on the spinners?

depending on how low the emmision #'s need to be... you could always put rubbing alcohol in the gas tank with a minimal amount of gas. However this has been covered numerous times, what computer are you using?

Re: (Braco11)
what everyone said. cat looks cold because you were fine at the higher speed. that gave the cat to warm up and work. make sure to drive your car around for a good 30 mins before the test. and make sure you keep the car on before they test it.
the ref tech was cool enough to realize that the car couldve passed if it was warmed up a little more. the tech ran the car for awhile before retesting it. rev'd it up a little. second time it passed. good luck to you.

Re: (Braco11)
I drove it directly to the BAR ref for about 30mins but they took about 10mins to put it on the dyno.
They ran it for an hour after they said i failed visual and failed emissions.

Re: (Luserkid)
on my papers says tampered. so i guess i failed on that due to using a civic cat. wrong location of O2 sensor which they called modified.
missing cap for EVAP and missing Tee fitting for IABV.
But other than that they failed me for GROSS POLLUTER with my high NOx and HC

Re: (vietfella)
I don't understand these dam places, why would they need to legalize an engine that has small displacement. Most engines that honda make are one of the best designs on the street, why would they have to smoke a honda. Second, I went to a ref and they failed me on smog. I think its the person you take it to which determines whether you pass or fail. If they stick the meter inside the muffler and mess with your timing then the ref is shady. If they stick it on the tip of the exhaust, they are doing you a favor and want you to pass.

^^ I agree, when I had my y8 in my EJ1 they failed me on visual, but it passed on emissions. Why does visual matter when the concern is emissions? Im not polluting the damn air just their eyes.

Re: (95ProjectEJ1)
Failed again at Wyotech in fremont.
Passed all visuals.
Failed on emissions.
15mph
HC - 140 failed
CO - 0.37
NO - 1658 failed
25mph
HC - 53
CO - 0.05
NO - 135
I'm so close yet so far any ideas? thinking about shoving in 100 octane and new spark plugs and wires.

Re: (sageuvagony)
Here's what I'd do(probally how I passed BAR on my old hatch):
-Sea foam(done the right way it really lowers emissions signifigantly)
-Full tune up
-fresh oil change
-new cat
-new o2 sensor
-Run the car for at least 30-45minutes HARD if you have to go on a freeway, don't go passed 4th gear...try to keep the RPMs as high as possible.
-make sure all the wiring is soldered/heatshrunk(krimped wiring is how I failed the first times)
-Say a prayer
-as for the visual thing...you may want to just try a different ref station...I went to the ref @ pierce community college and the guy told me it was never going to pass because of all the visual things(not sure what the deal was there besides the krimped wires near the vtec solenoid), put a new cat on it and did the things listed above and then took it to oxnard community college and it passed with flying colors and no problems with visuals at all
obviously everything else seems to be in check so I don't need to say the absolute basics.
GOOD LUCK

Yup, pretty much what I ended up doing to pass. (see sig)
And yeah, if you hadn't put any miles on the cat, that might be an issue. When I put on a new cat, the tech told me I had to drive it a little to let the cat break in

Re: (Braco11)
HC is unburned fuel which means you should tune up your car. high Nox cat is not oxidizing. and are you sure you hooked up the knock sensor, it controls retard on the timing. if not that can add to your nox failure

Re: (fmrprojects)
knock sensor should be all correctly installed. had a tune up the day before changed spark plugs, dizzy cap and checked timing.
broke the cat in as much as i could with an hr of freeway driving. had an oil change during the week. running 91.
so hopefully this seafoam stuff works. so should i use the seafoam before i go to get it smogged or anytime before is fine?
