Default Exhausts and gas mileage

Would installing an exhaust in your car hurt your gas mileage?

under equal driving conditions, a high flowing aftermarket exhaust will yield slightly better gas mileage than a stock system.

This is wrong. An exhaust system will allow more air to flow through the engine. As a result, more fuel will be added to match the airflow, resulting in less MPG.

i personally experienced an increase in mpg when i put an aftermarket exhaust on my del sol. a pretty dramatic increase in mpg. people might claim a drop in mpg because they're more likely to drive the car hard. if i'm wrong i apologize...

I have ALWAYS recorded an increase in MPG after exhaust and intake. Especially on the highway.

I keep regular track of my MPG so I'm not just pulling this out of my crack.

So intakes and exhausts give you better gas mileage.

no, a free flowing exhaust is going to help mileage. kinda like the same principle that a K&N filter helps mileage... it's not about how much air is going through the engine... it's about how much work the engine has to do to push and pull that air.

thanks, glad to see i'm not crazy.

i was sitting here trying to think as to why that guy said a free flowing exhaust would allow more air into the engine..

Correct...the engine doesn't have to work as hard to produce the same amount of power over stock.
