Default Exhaust Manifold Tempurature?

Hey guys just curious what tempurature the exhaust manifold normally gets. I am going to clean mine up a bit and wanted to paint it black. I found a paint good up to 1200 degrees F. Is that good enough?? It is a Type R 4-1 on a B18C high compression that revs to 9500rpm. Thanks for all your help.

I have yet to come across anyone (myself included) who has had reasonable success using even purpose-made exhaust manifold paint to finish a header. Invariably, the paint either flakes, burns, or otherwise becomes damaged and the finish does not last. My suggestion if you would like to improve the appearance and longevity of your header would be to have it professionally coated inside and out. It is not terribly expensive, and most coaters will provide a lifetime guarantee with their work.

The paint may last till 1200F but the problem also lies in it cooling and heating constantly, i.e. expanding and shrinking. Call the manufacturer and ask them for their thoughts. If you can get someone other than the call answer monkey you can usually get some pretty answers. Worse comes to worse, try it and tell us how well it worked.

Cheers.

We did this to a friends header, the paint just turned white after a few minutes, you could literally see the smoke coming off the header as the paint burned away

I don't believe the paint we used was 1200 F, I think it might've been very slightly lower than that but not by much, give it a shot and see how it works out, let us know
