Default Exhaust Diameter? Cat?

92 EX, snapped exhaust midpipe last weekend. Plan on a turbo this spring.

From what I see, most downpipes are 2.5-3" Do they bolt onto the stock diameter Cat or do you need the same diameter Cat? Since I plan on running ~9psi, I'm guessing a 2.5" exhaust will do. Can I get a cat with stock inlet and 2.5" outlet (and then replace it in the spring with 2.5-2.5)? I'm kind of at a loss since most systems I see are cat-backs. I don't see the reasoning behind having a 2.5" downpipe then constrict it to whatever stock is (1 5/8?) through the cat only to open back up to 2.5".

I was also hoping to get this "temporary" setup for $500 or less so I can get rid of the soupcan patch that's on there now.
Any ideas? manufacturers? websites?

Thanks.

just buy a stock replacment till you can do it RIGHT with a 3" all the way from the downpipe (cat/exhaust) once your boosted.

I`d want 3" all the way back if I was boosting.
