excessive smoking after 4k???
i just finished breaking in my rebuilt b18c1 and im smoking excessively at higher rpms....dark black smoke pours out when i jump on it .......i have noticed that my plugs do have a bit more carbon buildup then usual. I recently ran a compression test and numbers were fine so i do not think that the problem lies within the rings.....im thinking that maybe the problem has something to do with the valve seals or a valve guides......anyone have any other suggestions for where the oil is leaking from? thanks

black smoke usually means burning oil. so if the compression is ok through all 4 cyl. then the next thing to check is the valve seals. do you get smoke on start up after the car sits for a while?
because if the valve seals are bad and the car is parked the oil will seep into the combustion chambers and then burn off on start up.

Blue smoke means your burning oil black smoke usually means your running too rich. Did you do any mods when you rebuilt it like cams.

rich motors do run black, like the exhaust ports and exhaust tips almost like soot but i have never seen black smoke, thats why i still assumed it was oil.
but you are true that blue smoke is oil. but when he said black i thought it was excessive oil burning

are you losing oil?
but if you say the plugs are black then you might be running rich and not losing oil

Yeah if its puring out black smoke your running rich..and if you say its DARK BLACK than that is pretty hard to ,mix it up with light grey/blue oil smoke. Check what your fuel pressure is at and such.
What is done to the motor?

Re: excessive smoking after 4k??? (slowdx)
I have a similar problem with my stock 92 VX(D15Z1) but the smoke is gray/white and comes out at idle and throughout revs. But it seems to run ok other then that.
I am thinking that I need check compression for good measure, then move on to O2 and MAP sensors.
My check engine light never turns on and I don't know how to check the codes on this ECU as it seems a bit more involving then an 88-91 ECU.

That sounds like it could be water vapor from a bad head gasket, check to see if you are loosing coolant.

Re: excessive smoking after 4k??? (92slowvic)
i have 1,008 miles on my motor....it has AEM ITR intake, header, exhaust, CTR pistons, CTR cams, P28 (Kenji chipped), Skunk2 IM. I know the chip runs a bit rich but im losing oil like crazy and its not leaking anywhere visible and Ive searched everywhere. My check engine keeps coming on and its the O2 sensor and after replacing it and resetting the ECU it lcame back on any thoughts?Akumaracer it does smoke upon start up after sitting so i figure it has to be the valve seals. Thanx for the help everyone. BTW what tools are needed to replace the seals on your own?
