Default EX engine worth it??

If i had a hatch (96-00) would it be worth it to do an engine swap for the Civic EX (96-00) engine?? 127 hp w/ vtec or something. I kno it is really cheap to get that engine, but is it worth it or jus save for the B16?

thanks

just get the vtec head off the ex and put it onto yours and you have vtec. which might run you 2 or 3 bills. but its all up to you. and a b16 longblock might run you 4 to 5 bills so you decide

Save your money, and invest in a B-series motor. They are cheap nowadays, you can probably find a b16 for around $1800.00. A buddy of mine just bought a JDM SIR motor for $1575.00, and it came with everything, except for the shift linkage. Get this, the motor only has 30k miles on it, and it comes with paper work, stating everything is legit, and the motor is in GRADE A condition.

I'd save up for a B-series. I don't know about other peoples' experiences, but good b-series engines are still pretty pricey here around the bay.

not worth it in my opinion...from 106hp to 127? thats a 21 hp gain...unless you get an unbelievably great deal on that sohc dont do it...get the b16 and youll have a 54hp gain...if you had a motor like mine ANY swap would be good haha

it all depends on how much power you want in the long run.

No, save your money on a better engine. Like cxSOHChatch said 21 HP gain is not worth it, but I dont kno how much you're willing to spend so its you call. Whatever suits you.

The only thing is that an EX head and ECU can be found for almost nothing. The 21HP gain you get this way is much cheaper than what we B series guys pay for a 21HP gain on our motors (what, header, exhaust, intake MIGHT make 21HP, and how much does it cost?).

The EX head is worth it in the very short run. It's a cheap upgrade, but if you're going to get into this power sickness with the rest of us, it will be throwing good money after bad.

Not worth it in a car as heavy as yours. If you had a 2000lbs CRX I'd say go for it.

Hey, yea i have the 98 HX engine, and although the EX has 10 more HP than my engine, i'll tel lya it isn't worth it...at all..i dont even have my liscense yet but my dad let me test out what power my engine has...and it doesn't have much.. I have already started saving up for the B16a (sir2) engine...I recommen you do the same

also, for the dude who said that the ECU and head of an EX is a cheaper 21 hp gain than waht the B seriies people pay for 21 hp...well u gotta consider if he wants to get up there and turbo his car and what not...the D16y engien isn't a good platform for all that. The guy i bought my car from sold it for the soul reason that the D series engine is crap to start out with...its like, your building a house, would you rather build it with a screwdriver (which doesnt cost much) or a drill (which costs more), which one will make the house get built quicker? which one will be more efficent? Although it may cost more it'l help you out more in the long run...i dunno, i think that analogy sucked but it was all i had at the time

well it is just going to be a daily driver, but i thought there would be a lot more potential in the EX motor than the DX one. Well i guess saving up for the b16 would be better.

Gee.. I sure wish somebody woulda told me that before I went and wasted $$ on turbo'ing my D16! Now I'm stuck with a "crappy" 217whp D16 that cost me $2500 to turbo, when I coulda spend that $2500 on a B16 and had 80whp less.. but at least i'd have a DOHC VTEC!!....

I hope you modified your bottom end. SOHCs are notorious for spinning rod bearings. Four friends of mine have spun bearings on their EX motors. One friend has acutally had 4 different EX motors and they all spun bearings. The bottom end on those things suck. I'm glad i traded my EX in for a GSR.

I've heard the same, but no, my bottom end is bone stock along with the rst of te motor. It comes down to lubrication really, good oil changed frequently and it'll last, has for me and alot of my D16 turbo breathern.
