Default Erratic gas gauge?

Started off the day driving with a little below half tank, and noticed that the gas needle was all over the place while driving. It would dip into the red when stopped! Please help me

does it stay in the red until you move again?

if you pull the float out of the tank and plug the connector back in, you can turn the key on and have a friend move the float arm from empty position to half to full position while you watch the gauge. if the needle reads what your friend is moving to then you know your float works.

you may want to look for breaks in the wire or something like that. i would think you could get some squirrly readings on your gauge if the wire is shorting or contacting a wire with different voltage.

maybe the gauge itself... but the best way to test that is to get a new one.

Yeah it stays red until I get moving for awhile...then it slowly rises back up to normal. Thanks for the tips
