Default Engine Won't Turn Over, leaving me stranded!!

Engine: D16Z6
Problem: Every now and then the engine won't turn over, mostly when its warm. But then again sometimes it will start without a problem. Sometimes when it is starting you hear a really bad scratching noise.

Anybody else have a problem like this? My dad says its the distributor, but the mechanic who changed my oil says it was "that solenoid". Didn't really specify if he was referring to the vtec solenoid or the starter solenoid but he was banging on something in the area on the engine near the vtec and it started(slow, and scratching very loudly).

check your battery-post connection ( rusty, loose?)
normally, if you hear that 'click-scratching' noise of the starter, it means that it doesnt get enough current to turn .

unlike, if the battery and connections are good, but no ' click-scratching' noise from the starter= bad starter.

if the alternator is bad, the car is running on a battery only, so...
its gonna die in a few miles ( not warm, cold, etc), will not be able to start ever again, until new battery+ alternator.

PS: mine was bad alternator ( somewhat "short-circuited" mods), toasted the battery in the end as well.

Also: did you get CEL ( check Engine Light) ?

Once it starts running its fine. It has never died while its running. As far as I know the battery is fine, posts are nice and clean but the cables are a little loose even though they are tightened all the way down.

like you said,
"still a LITTLE loose" , i personally would replace it with a good-clamp post ( no-play / tight)
making sure if that is the only problem.

Alright then, guess its off to the parts store tomorrow. I might as well just start living there, I've never had a car with so many problems. Okay, so if thats not the problem should I go ahead and get the starter?

Do you have an autozone in your area? they will check battery and alternator for free.

Is it possible the reason its doing this is because of the vtec solenoid? Just a question, I'm going out to test my battery and whatnot, and also probably get a starter.
