Engine Vtec Symbol
Question:
92-95 Civic Si Coupe 5spd (canadian version)
I found a 93 Civic Si coupe 5Spd and looked on the engines valve cover and it only said "honda" and said nothing about Vtec, is this engine still vtec but does not say so? And how do I go about finding if it is or isnt a vtec motor? thanks alot :D

If it is VTEC (which it shuld be because it is a D16Z6) the spark plug wires should be on the front of the head towards the front of the car (exhaust manifold). Also look for the engine code somwhere on the head or block (im not sure which) it should begin with a D.

all you have to find is the vtec silinoid, and read the engine code....
there were only a select few of the actuall "vtec" valve covers....... just like on all the d16y8's do not say vtec on them...
and only select years through 92-95 did they say vtec

Since it's Canadian, it's the USDM EX model. I'm not sure what engine came in that car, or if it had VTEC. I know the 96-00 EXs had VTEC, but I don't know about 5th gens; since the Z6 was in the Si at the time.

Thats bullshit. I swapped in a y7 in my 97 EX and the spark plugs are the same as on the y8 (VTEC) they are in the front by the exaust manifold.
THE ONLY WAY TOI KNOW FOR SURE IS IF IT HAS THE VTEC SOLENOID on the back left side (looking at your motor with the hood up) of the valve cover. Ya, a lot of vtecs valve covers dont say it on there, thats how you know...the solenoid. if you dont have it....its just a normal d series. if you do...woo hoo...127HP

the 5th Gen did it that way....which is the topic of this thread. All 5th gen VTEC motors had the spark plugs in the front...non-VTEC had them in the back. 92-93 most didn't have VTEC on the cover....94-95 most had the VTEC on the cover. But, its still just a cover. The best way to find out is ON A 5TH GEN, the spark plugs, the solenoid, and the engine code (look for the O2 sensor and follow it back to the block...it'll be at the furthest point left of the block). And, the engine for the 5th gen put out 125hp....its 127 in the D17 in the 01+ EX.

^ What he said.
LOL, I can't believe I hear this question as much as I do. Some people honestly think that only the cars with vtec on the valve cover actually have it.
