Default Engine thumping noise - How to make Lemons out of Lemonade

This week I went to Sacramento and took my hatchback unfortunate it didn't return in the same situation. The car is still running but it has a thumping sound, a local mechanic gave me a 5min trouble shoot, he said that there was no oil in the engine and that what caused the thump. [I showed him that that the dipstick was full but he told me it must be a malfunction with the oil pump]

So there's three things that might be the problem

1. New oil pump? so that the engine can get new oil

2. loose bearings or something to do with bearings

3. New engine

if worst comes to worst and it is the engine should i buy the stock engine, or do a swamp, the car is otherwise in good shape, but i think its a grocery getter even with forced introuduction any ideas on where to get a engine cheap or even used
and if i should bother with the swamp

the car is 1992 honda civic dx
