Engine Swap / State Ref

Engine Swap / State Ref
My questions are regarding California State law and engine swaps + mods.
1. Do the engine swaps have to be from the same model or the same manufacturer?
2. What are the full guidelines part relocation modifications? IE, moving the exhaust piping to a new location.
3. Is there anyway to get a fuel cell State Refs and what are the guidelines?
4. Can turbos(low boost) or Superchargers(low boost) be State Reffed and pass inspection?
I'd like to do a 98 h22 type s(sh if only usdm is allowed) swap, remove my current fuel tank and replace it a fuel cell located approx 6" above current location (inside the cab), and run my exhaust straight out the back. What general mods (header, cams, intake, etc)Mods can I expect to push beyond the acceptable SMOG level?
Thanks in advance

1. doesn't matter but you can't take a truck motor and put it in a car.
2. they don't give a **** about moveing the exhaust as long as it passes the sniffer test
3. don't think so not sure
4. only if the turbo kit/ supercharger has a carb number on it. so basiclly you can't peace together your own kit and get it to pass. even if it did pass emissions all aftermarket parts need to have a Carb number

Re: Engine Swap / State Ref (seppuku)
1. Do the engine swaps have to be from the same model or the same manufacturer?
Same manufacturer. So Acura into Honda = good, Chevy into Mazda = bad. The engine must be something that was offered here in the US. It also must be the same year or newer than the chassis it's going into.
2. What are the full guidelines part relocation modifications? IE, moving the exhaust piping to a new location.
As long as you retain the smog equipment and it works (i.e. cat converter and O2 sensors, etc)
3. Is there anyway to get a fuel cell State Refs and what are the guidelines?
I don't think they will say anything, but check with a ref first.
4. Can turbos(low boost) or Superchargers(low boost) be State Reffed and pass inspection?
If the turbo/SC is a kit that is CARB certified of rthe engine you are using. For example you put a b18b into a civic and run a CARB certified SC on it, it has to be carb certified for the year and model that the engine came out of (i.e. 94 Integra)

Wrong! Must be same manufacturer (check DMV site)

Re: Engine Swap / State Ref (nonsense)
i stand corrected but i don't think your correct about how it must have been offered in the usa.
first gen b16a never offered state side
b16b never offered state side
f20b (SIRT accord) never offered state side
and all of those motors can be passed and certified

looks like you can as long as the ECU is of a USDM car . . . . good thread about all the REF stuff:
