Engine Smoking Oil
My buddy has a 2000 Si with a turbo b16. The engine has about 10k on a oem rebuild. Recently the car has begun to smoke. The smoke is coming out from the oil breather filter. When i take out the dipstick the smoke will also come out of there. we did a compression test last month and everything looked good across all cylinders. The car hasn't run any differently and there are no check engine lights. There isnt a leak that i can see and i put a piece of cardboard underneath while it idles for a few hours and it dripped barely anything. It doesnt smoke that bad, the only reason i can tell is i could smell it through the vents and then i popped the hood. The oil level is fine and it was changed about 1000 miles ago and its not black or anything. I figured it might be turbo related because he has a cheap ebay one but would that cause the engine to smoke out the oil breather and dipstick? Any suggestions on what to check next would be great.

Re: Engine Smoking Oil
do another compression/leakdown test... sounds like piston rings.
First indication of blown rings = smoke outta breather filter and sometimes dipstick(popping out).
Hopefully it's not the rings tho.

Re: Engine Smoking Oil
wouldnt you notice a loss of power if it was the rings though? I mean that was kinda my second thought but it drives like normal and its been doing it a couple days. whats the difference between a compression and leakdown test?

Re: Engine Smoking Oil
also the smoke is white..wouldnt oil burn black or blue? Now its startin to sound like antifreeze? If the headgasket is leaking antifreeze would it smoke out the oil breather?

Re: Engine Smoking Oil
It's more likely to be rings than head gasket, Mine is doing the same thing, and my cylinder 1 has about 90psi and the others all have around 130-140. I'll be rebuilding very soon hopefully.

Re: Engine Smoking Oil
check your pcv system, pcv could be dirty or the pcv hose could be plugged or the oil seperator could be plugged, does that only happen at ilde, engine hot/cold, wat are compression numbers, with a turbo on there is going to be more blowby, if everything test good and runs fine i'd say it's probably normal, you should consider getting a catch can
