Default Engine knocking, engine rods seem ok...?

New to the forums.. yoot.. yoot!

EDIT: Almost forgot the engine doesn't have enough power to drive at high speeds

Ok I recently aquired a 96 civic coupe with a D16Y7 engine. Before I got the car, the guy told me he had purchased the car with a bad engine, and had purchased a block and engine head separately and from different locations, obiously used. Now the car does turn on but there's a knocking on the engine, him being a so called "mechanic" couldn't figure it out so he decided to give me the car dirt cheap and told me that the issue is within the head, and that the block is fine.

Now I've started taking apart this engine, I've taken almost everything apart to the point we're it's just the bare block, at first I was 100% sure the engine had spun a bearing and that a rod was causing the knocking, after finding out that all the bolts holding down the rocker arms/valves were loose, I drained the oil, ready to find metal shavings..... nothing(just a lot of tiny bubbles and one interesting piece, pic bellow)... removed the oil pan and started to check the rods, nothing solid, although they do have freeplay from side to side, hard to say how much, maybe the thickness of a credit card.. ? (Hard to explain see my amazing drawing bellow)

Overall what can be the cause?

Looks like copper about 1/2 cm in size The only piece that came out, oil pan looks clean

Sorry pic is sideways, all rods are the same

Lastly almost forgot, also found a small metal piece in the radiator... piece from engine or radiator itself?

Help will be highly apreciated!!

Check the rods to see if its from a d16y7, or check to see if the crank is from a d16y7

There is supposed to be a little side to side play. It's called connecting rod end play. on the 92-95 civics it's .006-.012" standard (new) with service limit of .016".

The factory service manual will have the specs for the 96-00 motors.

You measure it with a feeler gauge.

Here is the FSM for the 96-00 civics, looks like the same spec:

We're are the markings on the rods/crank located to verify? Can that be a possible cause?

Will check in a bit.

Ok.. long day...

I ended up spending the hole day checking the engine throughly, and we'll came out empty handed. Was going to remove the engine but decided to just check the rods and bearings wile the engine was in the car, and there in really good shape, they almost look new, the block actually looks new compared to the trani. Checked the block inside (the best I could) and to my surprise it looks like it's in really good shape, compared to other engines I've seen.

After I was done, I decided to check the head and we'll it looks ok although I might be wrong, there's no sing of valve contact, or bent valves.. I'll take it apart tomorrow.

Well at least I found out were the little cooper pice came from, head gasket is in really bad shape.

A bit of buildup on the piston valve groves

Interior, ok condition compared to other engines I've seen

Bearing.. looks really good
