Default Engine identification issue

I have a d16y8 and from everything that I've looked through one of the engine codes should be L4. Several of the parts distributors I have ordered parts from have identified my engine as an elf or online. However I was noticing when I put my starter on yesterday near my engine code on the blog it says L3. I look through some parts websites and was unable to locate and L3. Does anyone have a clue what is going on with that?

Okay. It's the gearbox code for a European d16a8/a9. Does that mean I have a mini me swap? Because I put on a 96 model starter and it is not working exactly right. This is what led me to the question of whether or not my engine block might be different from my head.

Gear Box/Transmission doesn't have anything to do with the engine block or the engine head on D series engines from everything I've understood.

As for starter, you should only have two options on the D series, either manual transmission (1 starter type) and automatic (another starter type).

Things might be different in Europe but that's how it works in North America (not sure about Mexico).

I figured it out. It's the clutch and transmission off the 91 that the d16y8 was swamped into. Therefore I have to take that starter back and get the starter for the 91 because the flywheel does not match up exactly. So apparently if you do an engine swap and keep the remaining transmission and clutch then you have to use the starter for the original. At least I think I'm right about that now after asking a lot of questions.

Good deal, that makes sense.

Like here in North America, the 88 transmission has a difference spline count that won't fit into the engine.

Something similiar could be the case with the flywheel in your country. The starter would be transmission specific indeed.

I live in North America. Lol. Don't ask me why the L3 gearbox came back as European. That's all I could find when I looked it up. But it is definitely an 88-91 transmission and clutch. So tomorrow I gotta swap back to an earlier model starter.

Good to know. I'm not familiar with the 4th gen D series setups as much except that knowing the spline count on the input shaft is different on the 88 over the 89-95 I believe.

From what you are saying the previous generation also had a different starter setup from 88-91. Then again, I suspect the same is true for the 92-95 compared to the 96-00 d-series.

The gurus in the EF section may know more specifics if they don't already hang out here in the 5th-6th gen section (92-00).
