Engine dies at 3500 rpm, tach bouncy too
Newbie post!
History:
95 civic 1.6 vtec. SE coupe 268K miles
Car died at 3500 rpm, turned key back on, ran. Car died again the next time, no restart. Sat for 5 minutes, started up, died at 3500 rpm.
Changed:
ignition switch, coil, cap, rotor, plug wires, plugs, fuel filter.
White paper... VTEC not getting oil so it shuts off fuel, usually low oil level. I check, sure enough, low oil level. Fixed oil leak, check oil every day.
Ran okay, meaning it didn't die, except for the tach bounces a bit at around 3500rpm, and it has a stutter or I can't explain it at 3500rpm for about a week.
Now.
Car sometimes dies at 3500 rpm, turn off key, turn back on, runs.
Car sometimes repeats the dying issue, but tach always bounces at 3500rpm.
Oil level is fine. Tach still bouncy and car will usually die if I get over 3500 rpm with the same type of thing as before. I can cruise along all day with no bouncey tach, nor car dying, nor stuttering if I stay below 3500 rpm.
Could be oil pump not delivering at higher rpm.
Could be something electrical, although I dunno what.
Fuel pump is fairly new.
NO CHECK ENGINE LIGHT comes on either!!
So.. I am at a loss. Any help?
Thanks!

ps.. i did a search and no luck

Try changing out the distributor. When my tach used to sputter, it was because the distributor was goin out. Lemme know if that helps any.

Would not a bad distributor affect all rpm ranges? I really think it has something to do with the VTEC system, but what, I don't really know.
I'll keep the distributor change out as a thing to try though.
Thanks!

Just in case someone else has this problem.
NVMYSTI was correct! Distributor lost voltage output at higher rpm range. Swapped it out, done deal, back in business.
Thanks NVMYSTI!!
