Default eng. overheat

One fan does not work. What is the probable cause?

what year car?
what motor?
For all we know you could be driving a dump truck.

have you checked the fuse?

ONE fan?
If you're driving a civic you only have ONE fan. Radiator fan that is.
The other one is your condenser fan for your AC.

Check coolant level.
Done anything that required the cooling system to be opened up lately? (thermostat, head gasket, radiator hose, etc)
If so, you may have air pockets
Could be a bad water pump as well

Plug it in.. Maybe its your a/c fan??
