Most properly done stock swaps can pass smog. B series, H, or even K if you have the budget.

Since you live in California, then yes.

You will never be able to legally pass bar with an engine that came from a truck ( example CRV with the B20 engine ).

If I put a d16y8 in my 97 dx(considering my car already has a d series) will I fail emissions?

Where do u live ? If u live in Cali go to a local community college and ask an actual state ref
He will tell u wats allowed in ur car and Wats not allowed
Pretty much a b16b isn't allowed since it never came in a vehicle sold in the us but a b18c1 or 5 r as long as its newer than the vehicle its going into and u have all emission sensors working properly

Or you can "flash some cash" at a garage to pass you. Im sure you'd be able to find one. Illegal:yes smart way around super strict rules:yes

It all depends on which state/county you're getting your emissions test in. Some are MUCH more lenient than others.

For example, I'm a State Vehicle Inspector for Denton County, Texas. The inspection here is for both safety and emissions. I've never had an issue not passing swapped Hondas, GM's, Fords, or what-have-you here, AS LONG AS the check engine light isn't on and my emissions connection can get a good signal from the ECU, you're good...then again, we don't smog check (with the tail pipe sniffer on a dyno) vehicles newer than 1995 either (we simply plug into the OBD port), so... As I said, it all depends on the state/county.

Generally, if you get an engine/ECU the same year or newer than your vehicle, you shouldn't have a problem.

^fully agree. But cali is notorious for crazy strict emissons however and makes some swaps not SMOG/CARB able(if i got those wrong sorry i live in canada).

This is a stupidly simple question to answer. As long as the motor came out of a passenger car (not a light truck/SUV), is of the same year or newer, and maintains all factory equipped emissions devices, you will pass. It really is that simple.

i have even passed swapping a obd1 motor into a 0bd2 car. most blocks are the same and i swapped oil pumps and pans for crank sensor and other things. i have got it to pass many times . then i swap back my chipped ecu for more years after i pass. its all in how strict your state is. CA you have to have a newer motor then the car and basically sensor .charcoal canister, intke manifold, exhaust manifold etc.... all oem. its easiest to just have a parts car and swap everything over

This, but sometimes it can be very complicated, and some states are more strict on their tests than others. Some states have no tests.

It'd be helpful to know which state you live in...kinda hard to guess at the emissions requirements when they vary wildly across the country

You NEED every piece of emissions equipment! Especially here in California. From what I know, if you do a swap it needs to be from a car that was here in California. I'm not to certain of what was available in what model here in the Usa, i'm a honda noob. But If you wanted to be 100% legal Bar Legal you'll need every single piece of smog equipment from the egr down to whats coming from the gas tank?
Jdm engines will never pass smog, period.

There was a shop that did a bar legal f20 swap in an ae86, all i know that is was really expensive maybe around 10k. But now that car is 100% california legal.

Looks like some parts of Washington require tests and some do not. Do you require one?

Looks like a simple OBD2 test so any engine that is correctly swapped and is OBD2 should be fine although a b20 will not be federally legal.

A JDM engine will certainly pass however a JDM ECU will not pass the OBD2 check, you will have to use a USDM one.

Well when I originally got my car I had to do an emission test to register the car. And I believe they did the tailpipe thing and plugged in a code thing to the dash.
