Default EM1 sounds like a wrx - no misfire or mechanical problems!

I'm having this problem where my b16 sounds / feels like a subaru motor. The first thing I thought was misfire or a weak cylinder, but that is not the case. Here is what I checked so far:

Spark plugs: All 4 look perfect, same condition
Leakdown test: Perfect.... somehow (i was amazed)
Compression: Cyl 2 was 8.3% lower than 1, 3 and 4 (does this throw up a flag?)
Cylinder balance test: All 4 cylinders dropped the same RPM
Injector clip continuity / resistance to ECU
No burning oil, no missing coolant, no vacuum leaks.

Its a totally stock b16 with an intake and a megan header / 2.25" exhaust

According to all tests, all 4 cylinders are running fine. The motor seems perfectly healthy and pulls hard with no smoke, it just has that subaru stumbling / misfire feel between 1 and 3K rpm. Above 3K it smooths out. My girlfriend says my car sounds like an airplane! I am stumped! Anybody have any other ideas?

Mine did that when I bought it. It had an OBX header and some kung fu 2.25'' exhaust. I think it's a characteristic sound of the header and exhaust. Mine also felt sluggish at low RPMs....more sluggish than even a B16A should.

Try checking your ignition and cam timing. The culprit for mine was that the ignition timing was too far retarded. I think the T belt was stretched. I just changed the T belt...and have yet to re-check the timing.

thats funny - i have the cheap ebay megan header and cheap ebay 2.25" exhaust. i havent checked the timing.... i will do that, thanks. it does feel like it has a lack of torque and and sluggish at low rpm.

well good thing you got that figured out. i have a dc header and a apexi ws2 exhaust and its nice and quiet in regular driving (and doesnt sound like a wrx). you might want a better header like a hytech or hytech replica even, i've never heard people having problems with those.

the sound you are hearing is from water geting in your distributor most of the time u can just take the cap off and wipe it out and see if anything is rusted
