So I spent half a day getting the crankshaft pulley bolt off using a breaker bar/cheater pipe. Went through four sockets two extentions and two rachets. I managed to get myself sick in the process, but thats another story.

I have to do the timing belt on my other beater now and want to know if anyone has an Electric inpact wrench.

Are these strong enough? I'm thinking of a 1/2" with 240lbs torque. Will 240 ft/lbs enough to break that stupid bolt? I live in an apartment so no room for an air compressor. I really don't want to wrestle with the breaker/cheater bar setup again.

I have a Milwaukee electric impact that my parents got me for X-mas. If you don't have the ability for air tools this thing is a lifesaver. Crank pulleys, axle nuts, motor mounts, about anything. I even use it on my interior when i'm removing the seats and belt bolts. I reccomend getting one, they are well worth the money

I have removed axle nuts of with a battery powered Snap-On impact wrench. (18V-14.4V)

How much do these things run? Only thing holding me back from getting an impact wrench is having to buy a suffiecient air compressor too, are the savings big?

I have a 18V Snap-On as well and I will tell you I have taken lug nuts off time and time again. Took the axle nuts off and also have even busted the crank pulley bolt loose before. The Snap-On 18V kicks ***. I got mine on sale for 339.99 but they usually run 449.99. I highly recommend getting one. By the way for the post above about the air compressor they are battery powered.

if you're on a budget, look at the cheap one from harborfrieght runs about $50.00, its corded but works great for an amatuer mechanic. Of course if you have the cash a snapon battery powered one would be sweet. Either way you need one, my cheapy has amazed me time and time again, and makes suspension work a breeze.

Would the snap on 18v be able to do all the suspension work like the lca bolts, etc..?

I have taken the rear suspension bolts off at the junkyard several times. I have also not been able to take the off once. I actually broke the last one I tried to take off. Snapped it right off. But if it isnt seized up then ya I think it would work just fine.

I was wondering if it would be more cost effective to get the electric impact wrench everyones talking about or a traditional impact wrench w/ an air compressor?

on an LS block I worked on...I could NOT for the LIFE of me get the crank pulley bolt off.

I went to my buddies work, at a Chevy dealership in the truck repair center....used a 600 ft lbs rated gun....took about 5 minutes to get it off!! This thing was stuck

harborfreight.com has cordless impact 18v for $150 or $175 I can't remember which, but its a good investment makes putting on slicks at the strip a breeze.
