EK turning off randomly, each time different?
Hello,
1996 AUDM ek civic here
At random intervals (sometimes a couple days, sometimes fine for weeks) my car would randomly shut off, but with each time having slightly different results, here are the different times.
Works again fine for 2 months, and then car turns off while driving, steering wheel not locked, cluster lights not working, radio working. I pull over, turn the car off for 10 seconds. switch to ignition mode, cluster lights not working and the fuel pump is not priming. Wait 60 seconds, turn key, cluster lights working fine, fuel pump primes, fires up no problems.
Would take it back to the mechanic but im not willing to fork out even more money.
Suggestions? ICM?
Thank you

- Car shuts off and the steering wheel locked, with warning lights showing. Radio working. The car would crank very slowly then stop cranking. Wait 2 minutes, Fuel pump priming, and fires right back up.
- Shut off and steering wheel locked, no warning lights showing. Radio working but cluster lights not working. Car would crank at normal speed but wouldnt start up. Wait 2 minutes, Fuel pump primes. cluster lights turn on, engine starts.

Ignition switch. In the USA they recalled many Civics for that. Could also be a break in the underdash fuse box but that would be unusual.
The oil and battery lights should always come on when you have the key in the on position but the engine is not running. Those lights are simple circuits that don't involve the ECU or anything other than the ignition switch and fuses.
The radio, heater fan, etc are on a different circuit through the switch. That circuit cuts the radio when you turn to start, to get more power to the starter. The ignition circuit of course has to stay on while starting.
