Default Time Attack EK Hatch Build - Starting from Scratch!

Here is my build thread for my 97 Civic DX hatchback. Bought the car with 132k miles 2 years ago after being away from the Honda scene for over 5 years. Have had 2 DB8 GSRs prior and have always wanted a swapped hatch that would grow into a track car for time attack. So, with the background done, here are some pictures of the car when I first got it:

Completely stock with only an aftermarket headunit, purple window tint, and those bling bling fog lights from autozone! You could tell it had been in a small fender bender on the front driver side bumper but overall it was clean with no rust anywhere and a clean title. Items needed right off the bat: Remove hubcaps, Antenna Delete plate, Center console plugs (4), Shift boot, Hatch hydraulic arms, interior driverside mirror cover plate, and general maintenance parts.

After daily driving it stock for over a year, I picked up a 1996 Integra GSR for $1500 with 210k miles that would become my donor car for anything and everything it could provide to the Civic. Motor swap, seats, suspension, wheels, etc will all be eventually swapped over. The exterior of the Integra has rear fender rust, bottom door rust but the mechanicals in the engine, suspension and interior were mint. Here are pictures of the car in the craigslist ad and description:
2nd owner
Emusa catback
Invidia test pipe
skunk2 ultra series intake manifold
skunk2 70mm throttle body (same size as inlet)
spectre intake
ngk plugs and wires
Mobil1 oil. oem honda filter
Type r wing (replica. not on car)
Oem gsr wing (not on car)
Optional oem side skirts ("type r sides" replica)
Optional oem rear valance ("type r rear" genuine)
Mugen "style" lip
Interior all stock
True gsr

Out of the deal I got a clean B18C with compression numbers of 210, 214, 211, and 216! Driving it home it pulled extremely well and shifted perfectly considering the mileage. I was expecting some rebuilding but after inspection and driving it, leaving it as is and swapping into the Civic would be the first task.

At this point I decided I wanted to document it further and kicked off my Youtube channel and made videos of the entire build process to be able to look back on it and also add to my build thread. Stauffer Garage was born:

Here is the Civic with the GSR rims, tint removed, fog lights removed and my new garden edging front lip:

Now its time to put the Integra up on jack stands and prepping for engine removal!

Now that the Integra is up on stands, I can begin disconnecting all of the connection points to get the B18C out. It was pretty obvious that the integra spent its life in the north and the salt did a number on the underbody. Odd part is the actual drivetrain was flawless and had no signs of corrosion. The previous owner had the car for 15000 miles (out of 210k) and prior to him it was owned by an older guy who was meticulous with the maintenance and had a stack of receipts from 1 Honda dealer.

On the drive home after buying the car it was pretty obvious how strong the motor was along with the tranny and clutch. Doesn’t appear to be a rebuilt motor either… Honda reliability FTW.

The biggest reason I looked for a donor GSR instead of just buying a swap was it would allow me to drive and assess the condition of the drivetrain, have the suspension/brakes for a rear disc swap, and other bits that can transfer over. The remaining parts all go for decent money on the used market and based on parting out an Integra before, I believe I can make back the $1500 I paid for the car.

Took the GSR Snowflakes and fit them to the civic. Like the look more than I thought even with the Acura center caps. I think in the end I'll be painting these black and fitting a 225 width on them...
The plan for the GSR shell is to strip it down and sell everything I won't be swapping on Ebay to pay for the entire swap. Looking to recoup about $2000. If anyone needs anything in particular, hit me up as well and I'll let you know if I still have it.

It is time to pull the heart from the Integra and free the b18c from the chassis... and here is the obligatory picture when you pull a motor out of a car:
Obligatory motor pull picture! B18C is out off the teg

Got the civic into the garage and the D16 needs to be ripped out... ran into my first real issue. I stripped the damn nuts that hold the lower driverside mount onto the frame rail. They are inside the chassis rail and you cannot access them without cutting slots. Slots cut, nuts held with 17mm wrench and we were back in business!

Got the last bits of the B18C motor ready by joining the honda guy harness for vtec, iab, knock, crank position into the D16 harness and swapping over all the motor mounts I used from a CRV and the tranny d16 mount. Ended up using all OEM Honda mounts and it saved me a fortune.

So the donor motor already had a skunk2 manifold on it and I had to redo some of the vacuum tube routing and coolant lines to ensure I was as close to OEM routing as possible. I hate messing with flow rates and pressures from experience in my career in engine development... End of the day I still need to adjust the IACV since I think the idle adjustment screw is going to off for the system to operate properly. But for now lets get the b18c into the civic hatch!

It's time to turn it over and start the swap for the first time! Initial leak checks were positive so I took it for a spin to my local shop to get the Yonaka exhaust extended since the stock GSR manifold is pre 97 and is not as long nor does it have an O2 sensor bung location. Had a bung welded on for the primary sensor to read flow pre-cat and currently have the second looped up on a bracket by the passenger shock tower. Once I get this project progressed enough, aftermarket EMS (hondata, neptune or AEM) I will convert to OBD1 or delete secondary.

Time for a Honda B-series (B18C) engine swap update and some pulls with the new engine and Yonaka exhaust civic hatchback. In this video I also discuss how I had to replace the thermostat due to not being able to make block temperature at all which essentially didn't allow me to hit VTEC at all! You'll see in the footage how bad the seal was on the old one. Enjoy the 1-3 gear pulls from the outside and if you have any ideas of where the rattle from the exhaust might be coming from, please let me know. This is truly a fast car now with the swap.

Does anyone have any recommendations for track coilovers? I would love to run a set of PIC coilovers but they seem to never have them in stock. I also am considering a set of custom AMR Engineering coils.

There's a good post about coilovers in the suspension section FAQ.

I'm running Progress CSii (2) on my Civic. They are nice, and budget friendly.

Word is AMR is not very reputable, do your own research, YMMV.

I have a B18C1 sitting in my garage at the moment waiting to go in... Yonaka makes some nice budget friendly mounts as well, one of their better products.

Check your exhaust to see if it's hitting anything for that rattle...

Did you use the GSR shift linkage? I'm assuming yes.

Any issues with the exhaust mating up with the GSR header/cat converter?

Good to know on AMR... Now just to catch when PIC has some in stock. I did end up using the GSR shift linkage like HondaPartsHero mentioned. Regarding the manifold/Yonaka... I had the early short B18C OEM header that does not include an O2 bung, this causes it to be short to the Yonaka which replaces the cat as well. Went to a local shop who welded on a section to mate up for $20 with my materials.
