I'm confused, I thought my hatch was an EK but I checked the VIN and it said EJ6? Am I stupid or just misinformed?

misinformed. The generic term for 96-00 civics is being an EK. which are really Ej6/Ej8

I dont think there is any USDM EK's
I may be wrong on that one.

Yeah, it's a general "slang" term.

Like people say "EG" for 5th gen civics but an EG is really a del sol...

EJ1 would be the EX coupe - but the most commonly mis-informed one is the civic hatch, which is an EH, think EH2 is Si, don't have the sheet in front of me.

EG is a del sol though .

In terms of EK's they were all EGs, EJ's (Coupe = EJ8) or EM1's (Si's) - the EK didn't exist in America.

In short, instead of being a tool and using the common "EG", "EK", and "EF" - use the correct terms:

4th gen, 5th gen, and 6th gen.

Or call it on its exact chassis code, or just call out the year, body style, and trim code...
ie. "EJ1" or "'94 Civic EX Coupe"

You are right that there are no USDM EK chassis at all.

Well, EKs are all from other countries. There are lots of EKs in Europe, Australia, Japan and other parts of Asia. But there are also EJs in most of those countries too.

For example, the EJ7 was sold in Japan as the Civic STD Coupe.

Well, EGs also include some USDM '92-'95 Civic sedans. Not just some del Sols. And of course some del Sols are EHs.

And to clarify for the OP and others, the above was all referring to 5th gens, that is the '92-'95 Civics.

Perhaps this is a typo or I'm confused by your wording, but The EKs are 6th gens and the EGs are 5th gens. There are no EG chassis 6th gens anywhere of course, but there are 5th gen EJ chassis. As Syndacate mentioned, there are EJ chassis 5th gen Civic coupes.

But EJ8s can be sedans too.

Just calling your car what it really is is a huge help sometimes though.

Calling it an EJ6 hatch will narrow your model down to two different trim levels (CX and DX hatchbacks). Just calling it a CX hatch or a DX hatch might help more when you're asking for help though.

Just remember that the EJ6 chassis includes all 6th gen Civics with the D16Y7.

Speaking of which, I really should update my list sometime. There are errors in the current list and that bugs me since it's supposed to help teach. Most of it's correct though.
