My car is: 1997 Honda Civic Hx, automatic

Hey I was wondering if anyone has had issues with their climate controls, or know if its a common thing to break on these cars. Since I had the car the climate control never really worked. The only mode light that lit up on it was the defroster light. All the other modes don't work, or light up. And the defrosters are the only vents that work in terms of heat, and all the rest just blow out normal air. Now the climate control doesn't light up at all, and I'm getting quite sick of driving with no feet warmers and only defrosters. Also, the cold-to-hot tab is really hard to move back and forth. Don't know if that helps diagnose the problem. I'm just assuming the climate control is defective in some way, and don't want to repair it, just replace it. I'll find one in a junk yard, or on ebay. Just curious how you guys would go about this, and how/where they usually malfunction, and if its common.

Test the heater cable and valve as well as the mode control motor:

I don't know whether your problem is common. I have a 97 DX that has never had problems with the climate controls. I posted how I would troubleshoot the problems you are having.

Tomorrow I am going to take it apart and see whats up. I'm starting to notice there are a lot of little things that mess up in these cars, but didn't know if this was one people often ask about. Btw, where do you get all of those detailed pictures and info from? Alldata?


I also notice people converting their climate control to the 00 one...why is that?

The diagrams I post are taken from the service manuals. By searching, you can find free pdf versions.

Some people prefer the 99-00 climate controls partly because the heat control is electronic rather than manual.
