Default EK auto tranny question...HELP!!!!!

ok i have a 96 civic dx, which i swapped an EX motor into when i blew the DX one. i kept the dx tranny because i couldnt find another auto tranny, nothing seemed to be wrong with it, plus i didnt have the cash for the conversion. my question is:

on the gauge cluster where it shows what gear you are in...what does it mean when the overdrive position light is constantly flashing no matter what gear you are in?

also, i have to let off the gas pedal for my car to shift gears, AND ITS AN AUTOMATIC??? i have to let off at 20mph 35mph and 55mph then my car seems to hit the rev limiter and wont go faster than 80mph. does anyone have any clue as to WTF is going on with my car???

someone please help out here, and refrain from the "just convert it to a 5-speed" responses. thats out of the question at the time. i am just tryin to get this thing running right for the time being.

the one that came with my 98 ex engine (cant recall ecu code right off hand). according to honda the only differences in the trannys is the gears in them, being as the dx tranny has lower gears. once again, according to honda.

When you say the indicator is blinking in your cluster . do you mean D4 is blinking or do all the indicators blink like P - R - N - D4 - D3 - 2 ?

Make sure your A/T gear position switch does not have a short to ground. Other than that, it could be a problem with various solenoids (shift control solenoid, lock-up solenoid) or sensors. The blinking D4 is similar to the CEL, in that it is throwing an error code of some kind. Either you need to hook up a scan tool, or perhaps it can be jumped similar to the way you can rig it for the CEL to blink the error code.

ok can someone tell me where to locate the Lock-up solenoid and shift control solenoid, on the EK automatic tranny for a D-series motor? i think i know where the lock-up solenoid is...right on top of the tranny close to the exhaust manifold, single plug with two solenoids on it??? can anyone confirm this, and possibly tell me where to find the shift control solenoid? thanks in advance.

It is going to be hard to give you a real good description, because I am only looking at the Helms diagram and it shows the solenoids very close up. Anyway, I can tell you, both the lock-up and shift control solenoids fit the description of what you see. I believe there is only one other solenoid (linear solenoid) that is just a single solenoid. The lock up solenoid appears to be near a large hose (probably to radiator?) and the shift control solenoid is right next to the linear solenoid (the single). I hope this helps somewhat, like I said it is hard to guage exactly the location by just looking at the diagrams, if I could look in my car I would probably be able to give you a better description.

I will try to look for mine later, maybe I can give you a better description than the one I gave before. Helms description, "The shift control solenoid valve A/B assembly and the linear solenoid are bolted outside of the transmission housing. The lock-up control solenoid valve A/B assembly is bolted on the outside of the torque converter housing." Maybe that will help?

i got the shift control solenoid changed out. will find out later today if that fixed my problems. was fairly simple to exchange except that it took me 2 hours to get a funnel to put the ATF back into my car.

nope that didnt change anything. does anyone know whats wrong with an EK auto tranny when you have to left off the gas to get it to change gears????

i have to let off the gas at 20 35 and 55 to change into the next gear, and my car wont go faster than 80mph almost like its hitting the rev limiter yet you can tell its not revving that high. i know its not the ECU or the shift control solenoid.

how much atf did u put back in..also when u bolted the torque converter to the flywheel on the new motor was it drained completely? if it was u would of needed to put in like 6 or 7 quarts in....if that wasnt it, did u happen to check the shift alighment under your center console to see if it is misaligned?

You should get that error code man, if you need me to, I can look it up for you. It would be a much better way to skip all the trial & error BS.

is there anyway to pull the error code in an EK as you can with an EG by plugging a jumper into one of the plugs and it flashing the code???

hmm, not sure man. Hopefully someone else can help you out.

Maybe you could have the dealer just get the code for you?

Good luck.
