Default ej8 overheating..help please.

i drive a 1997 civic ex..like 3 days ago i was driving around town with my friend with the a/c on and i was going to drop him off and my car felt really bogged down and was sputtering through low rpm's..when we got to his house he said we should pop the hood..since he knows lots more about hondas than me i was like ya..so we popped the hood and the water in the resovor was boiling..he touched the hose that was coming off of the top of the radiator and it was hella hot..then the bottom hose wasnt hot at all like nothing was going through it...we both immedatly thought it was the thermostat..so i got home and changed the thermostat..it was driving cool up until today..i was driving down the road and i could tell that my car was getting hot but it wasnt as bad as the other day with my friend..so i tried to just take it easy and cruse to my house...then all the sudden the car shut off when i was driving down a street about 3 miles from my house...so i pulled over and let it cool down and filled up the resivor and drove it home...right now the car is out front of my house but idk what exactly is wrong with it...no check engine light or anything..could it be the water pump? any help is appreciated...thanks.
