EGR valve, what is it?
Need to learn something today.
What is an egr valve? I was speaking with someone today while waiting in line at home depot. He mentioned my issue with my car maybe an egr valve.
I have a 1996 civic ex, manual 80K. Just finished doing the head gasket and learned alot during the process. However, now I have another problem evolve. My car hestitates once in awhile during acceleration. For instance, as I am driving, I notice I lose a brief amount of acceleration only for a second. It is like the engine misses. The car never dies, just a brief loss of power during acceleration; while my foot is on the gas pedal. It doesn't matter what gear I am in either. I just bought the car, and I have no previous record of any tune ups. Any ideas? Thank you for the help. Oh, what is egr valve and its purpose? thank you
This might be related...when engine is cold and I start accelerating with 1st gear, the car goes. However, at a certain point, I can press the gas pedal but it does not go any faster. It is like it peaked in power. This only happens briefly. After I go back to first gear, I cannot make it happen again until the engine cools down..thanks...your thoughts? Sincerly

I doubt your 98ex has a EGR valve. only models I know that has them are the preludes and the HX models.
EGR= exhuast gas recirculating valve
power loss probabilites: cam timing, ignition timing, distirbutor or something inside it(ignitor,etc...), stored CEL that hasen't been cleared yet.

ex's didn't have egrs. it sounds like your timing is off. since you did the head gasket, you had to mess with the timing belt, so maybe you put it on wrong (couple teeth off). put it at tdc and see if everything lines up right. i had the same problem, the lady i bought my car from had the t.belt put on at some shop and they had it on a little off. they just fully advanced the ignition timing and that kinda hid the problem. but i would fix the timing belt if its off.

^^i know you were asking sleeper but i really think your timing is messed up. you can check it, but if it was your rotor/cap it would be missing like crazy or not even firing at all.

I agree, check your timing. also did you have similar problems prior to you remove the head gasket?

Yeah, I had the problem before I did the head gasket. You guys might have it. I will look through my helms manuals and verify the cam timing and ignition timing.
thanks for heading me towards what hopefully is the right direction. I was heading towards the cap and rotor.
Happy Holidays and thanks for the troubleshooting help. Most of all, teaching me.
