if you're talking bout the springs that connect the header to your cat, then yes, they're needed, they're there because when metal heats and cools it will fluctuate in size.

There should be a slight gap between the bolt holes, but the header/cat part should sit flush.

This is the cat and header.

This is the cat and mid section.

This is the mid section and axle back.

Does the mid section and axle back have the springs also? the guy i got it from had it on an 1992 SI HB and i have a DX. Is there supposed to be a slight difference or am i missing something?

i think there are supposed to be springs on the axle back part you pictured.

also, my cat and header were about that far away as well.

i just tighted the bolt and nut as hard as i could and it drew them together

The springs don't go in between the flanges. The springs should be between the outside face of the flange and the bolt head.
